My friends car (2g FWD TSi) is only running on cylinders 1 and 3. What is wrong here?

He said he has swapped out coil packs and other things but wonders if it's his ECU or the crank sensor or even CAS. Car ran fine before it cranwalked (bought new RUNNING engine) so it can't be the ECU right? Said it sounds like it was running on all 4 at one time then stopped and only runs on 2.

This isn't for me it's for him just wondering what the problem is.

He should compression test it and do a leakdown test. There's a lot of things that could cause it to only run on 2 cylinders. What are the specs on the car, what motor was dropped in, etc.

7 bolt motor with everything else stock. He pulled the motor from a running car so it was fine when he bought it. Maybe it's operator/installer failure or maybe something went bad outta nowhere. He said he did the coil packs but probably swapped used for used. No idea but I'll let him know. Thanks for the inputs.
