Hey guys,

Ok so basically i have a 1999 GS, and the motor stopped working. Long story short, it overheated to a point where the timing belt snapped, and the valves in cylinders 1 and 4 are bent. So it needs 8 valves replaced. The water pump was also completely done, which i think was a main cause to its overheating. The mechanics say that it will run me about $2400 to fix. I silently laughed.

My parents advised me to junk it but i never gave up in looking for cheaper ways to fix it. I thought of the idea to replace the whole cylinder head. That will take care of the valve job. All I would have to do after that is get a head gasket kit, a new timing belt and a new water pump, (which I already have). This seems like a good plan but there is a problem.

A few days before the car broke down, my friend and I heard a faint knocking noise coming from the engine area. it came when you revved it past 3.5-4k. It mostly came from the passenger side of the car, which lead me to think it mite have been the water pump, because that thing was really not working right at all. (An example, I would have to pour water in wherever I went, and I would lose just about all of it with about 45min of driving max, and that got worse as time passed).

Now I am being told that if its a bearing, dont even bother, its lots of work to even check for that, less fix it. I am basically running the risk of replacing all that stuff and having a slight chance that I will have that faint knocking, which is a risk I am willing to take. What is the best way to go on this one? Any ideas on what that knocking mite be?

Thanks guys

Well first off, dont go replacing anything until you know the bottom end is ok. The first step will have to be to get the exhaust off, pull the oil pan and check the bearings, etc. If the bottom end is ok, then you can proceed to replace the head, timing belt, and head gasket.
If the bottom end is not ok, then consider just looking for a running long block that you can drop in.

For $2400 i wouldn't bother figuring out what that motor needed. Just look for a 420a replacement and drop it in yourself. Honestly IMO id move on to a gs-t or gsx.
