I was told that in order to fix a broken CV joint i would have to get a new axel. Am I just paranoid or is this correct?

That's usually the most cost effective solution. You can replace JUST the joint, but there's more labor involved, and the price of an outer joint is often 80%-90% of what the whole shaft costs (speaking in general here, not specific to DSMs).

How much would either one cost me? My cash flow is extremely low right now so I would have to choose the cheapest solution.

The axle normally is around 100. Aftermarket parts stores normally have lifetime warranty. When you go to purchase one you will need the year, transmission type, and if the car is equipped with abs.

Ok 100 isnt bad for a new axel but what about labor? how much time and effort and most importantly how much of a divet is it going to put in my bank account?

BTW thanks for your quick replies :thumb:

I would never again buy a reman axle or a new axle from an auto parts store.
I did both axles on my CRX using parts store remaned. Two months later they both started clicking. They were warrentied but you still have to take the new ones back out, take them in, and put the newer set back in. Maybe it was just bad luck but if I am going to risk that I might as well find some super cheap used axles and hope their good.

If you want something that will last Raxles is highly recommended but they are more expensive than an autostore axle and for a reason, you won't be replacing it again.

The CVBoot VFAQ covers more than you need to know if your just replacing the axle.

Hopefully your axle won't be rusted to the hub.

I had to have someone put an axle in for me one time (a damn bolt was seized on the suspension) and they only charged me 50 bucks. they said it was a pain in the ass to do to. (Honda). Hope this gives you an idea.

it really shouldn't be more than around $100 as they said. you shouldn't have the problem i did. My car, '94 Laser Turbo, has the larger diameter input shaft and no autoparts store had it, Autozone, O'Reilly, Carquest, Pepboys. I had to take it to an axle shop. they rebuilt both in like 2 hours for about $150

My driver side inner boot had torn. It was a PITA to fix it myself so I had asked SATAN to change it to a new axle. The axle from a parts store is already $120, add tools that you would need to complete the job (22mm socket, breaker bar) I estimated it to be almost what the dealer was asking.

I paid $200 for it and picked it up after 4 hrs.
