My buddy wes has a 92 AWD Laser RS all stock besides, front shocks, plugs and wires, suspension bushings, and the straight pipe exhaust. when you go to accelerate the car will start to take off like it should but then cuts out and loses a lot of power. you cant race it at all, it kinda sounds like a massive vaccum or boost leak. but we cannot figure it out. he dont know what the internet is so figured i post this and see if we can come up with any new ideas..

i wish! thatd be a simple fix, but this kid literally tweeks out on that car, he knows every little thing about the car. LOL but it almost sounds like vtec does. he does leak quite a bit of oil as he says
 
I have had issues when I boost the car would studder and cut out. Seems like a big problem but in reality it may just be the plugs. Replace them or check the gap. Its a cheap start to figuring out whats wrong.
 
Its all factory besides a few odds and ends. stock turbo. ^^ like you said studdering thats the best way to describe it... starts to pull and then studders and looses a lot of power. I know he gaps them to correct spec cause reliougously reads through his haynes book. And Ive seen cars run very odd when adding a dif spark plug, but most of the time its going on during idle. Bad BOV???
 
Boost leak would have been my first try but since its not; MAF sensor maybe? How high is the boost? also, wastegate not opening/closing? I ran into that issue before but it was because I had a bigger turbo and MAF wasnt reading accurately.
 
My 1990 did this at start of each gear, my knock sensor was set too low and was cutting the ignition process to prevent further damage, there was no knock and just had to adjust it. If hes boosting high his fuel system might not be keeping up, but if it does it at idle start with wire checks, then plugs.
