long story short my circle of friends got involved with a 99 gst spyder. after we suspected a blown head gasket we ran a block test and came back with a lot of exhaust gas into the coolant. we decided from here that we were going to make this our opportunity to dig into the car and learn as much as we could to make a reliable daily driver that we could take to the track and keep up with the competition.
we purchased a donor car, a 98 gst spyder with a fresh 500mile rebuilt 7 bolt 4g63t with auto trans. we specifically bought the car to swap motors and sell the donor car and use the proceeds to purchase parts for our car.
we sold the donor, purchased lots of new parts for our car, and went to town on an entirely fresh engine bay, drivetrain, and suspension.
4 months into this, we are a couple days from firing the car for the first time and have a lot of questions. hopefully we can get as much feedback as possible to help us get this car back on the road and enjoy the world of dsm. challenge submitted for all you gurus
here we go. . .
1.) we remember that there is a ground strap that is near the p.s. res. in the little cubby hole behind the driver head light. which bolt hole should we use to make a proper ground and will be fairly invisible to on-lookers?
2.) we remember that there is a flat braided ground strap that comes off the top center firewall and comes forward to the intake manifold or the throttle cables. any pictures of the proper location, is it a necessity to reinstall it? is there substitute locations?
3.) theres also a flat braided ground strap that comes off of the catalytic converter and goes up to the fire wall, also curious if this is a necessity
4.) we purchased an aluminum radiator with flex-a-lite 12" fans. we havent wired them in yet but the way we have them mounted to the radiator with the mounting hardware the kit came with, the fans sit about a 1/4" off of the radiator fins. do they need to sit closer to be as efficient as possible or is it ok for there to be a gap? if they are 100% flush, the fan blades come into contact with radiator so there with have to be a gap, but is 1/4 inch ok?
5.) we would like to incorporate the factory fans pigtails to use off the flex-a-lite fans so they can plug directly into the factory wiring harness, how do we go about this? what wires are positive, negative, which wires are "hi, low positive and negative" on the pig tails.
6.) we took a/c out and still want to use the aux fan on a toggle switch, we purchased a relay, fuse, and wiring for the set up, just curious how people routed everything, how this has worked for them, and any diagrams/pics would be much appreciated.
7.) after replacing the wheel bearings, suspension components, installing prothane bushings, rotors, pads, and axles, we notice now that the passenger side axle outer boot comes into contact with the lower front ball joint. how do we resolve this? the rubber just kisses the metal nut when the wheels are straight and will rub pretty good when steering left and right.
8.) we are now on KYB AGX adjustable shocks with megan drop springs. has anyone ran this set up. we intend on getting a shop to do the alignment and was wondering what shops will say, never taken a car to get an alignment so i don't know how it all works with after market suspension, also, what setting will work best to save the tires from camber wear yet will handle good on a circuit.
9.) lastly. . . for now, what is the proper starting process since the motor has been sitting dry for almost 4 months in 120 degree summer heat. the valve cover has been taken off many times and never bolted back on since the motor has been down for 4 months so we suspect micro dust and sand everywhere, how do we flush it efficiently/safely. how do we get oil pressure prior to starting with ignition? what to we do to get fuel pressure, stock set up. what oil is going to work best? we will be starting the car to look for leaks, and to see if all the wiring is ok since we have done a bit of tucking. then we plan to put new injectors, fuel pump, filter, and FPR on after initial start up. right after all of this, we are taking the car to RRE to be dyno tuned and hope all goes as planned
thanks for reading and your responses will be greatly appreciated.
trying to start the car tomorrow with or with out the fans.
