ok, im trying to take the crankshaft pulley off with a 5ton jaw puller. no luck. i keep chipping away the edge of the pulley. now, i know ill need a new pulley, but how can i get this one off?? im in the process, i thought, of doing a timing belt/ water pump change. but its obvious this problem i have now has prolonged the whole process!! please someone gimme some hints or tricks to get this thing off!!! and oh, should i go ahead and get a UDP, or buy and OEM replacement. thank you

The crank pully for the drive belts? I have never had a problem with it. Just remove the belts, undue the 4 bolts and pop it off. If you need to, hit the edge with a pry bar and wedge it off. Go with the stock dampner pulley. Not an underdrive one.

The pulley on 420a motors is pressed on unlike the 4g63 where you can just remove the bolts and take it off. It is a PAIN to get off, yes, but should be accomplished with the puller. It sounds like maybe you need to get the jaws farther back on the pulley so it doesnt chip it. Then what I did was take a longer bolt that threads into the crank and leave it out about 1/2" for the center of the puller to press on. Use an impact on the puller and it should come off.

well, after looking at the simply put picture in my chiltons manual, it shows the puller on the inside of the pulley, not the outside. which explains why i now have chips all around it. my problem now is, is that the bolt is not long enough to do anything. do i need to go buy a longer bolt? is there a rig of some sort that i could do.? and why wouldnt an UDP be good to get? are they not available for the 420a? i figure that since ive already messed up this pulley, why not get the UDP that everyones talking about being such a good upgrade?
any more suggestions as to what i should do to get this pulley off, so i can continue my TB change?

thanx guys

I was lucky and had a longer bolt laying around. You will probably have to go buy one though. Just take the old bolt with ya so you are sure you get the right size and thread. I'm trying to remember if i put the puller teeth on the inside or the outside....seemed like the outside. But anyhow if putting it on the inside works then I guess thats what you gotta do.

There are mixed opinions on a UDP. Some say you shouldnt do it because it doesnt eat up vibrations like the stocker is made to do and its bad for your bearings. Others say it doesnt even matter. In the end its up to you. Maybe do some more reasearch on it to help you decide.

ok, thanx for the reply man. its been like 2 hrs or somethin and still no luck. i guess ill go to home depot or somewhere and find a longer bolt. everything im doing is not werking and its frustrating me. ahhhhhhhhhhhh i love these cars!!
