Crankshaft Positon Sensor

I have a 97 Eclipe Gst.I have a problem and think it might be because of a faulty crankshaft position sensor (CPS)When I start it up, the idle is fine for about 30-40 seconds then the motor starts idling high around 1100-1200rpms and bogs down to about 600 rpms. Would that be the cause of it? The car just got a recent tune up and fuel treatment if that helps any.

Sounds like a bad isc. It is located on the bottom of the throttle body, and has a 6pin connector.You can test it by measuring the resistance between each of the three coils. A good isc will show 28-32ohms between pins 1-2,3-4,5-6.My pic of the isc is to big to upload.It looks like this

You want the little tongues for the connector grooves facing up

do you think a vacum line will make it run like that also
do you think it would have to do anyhing

+1 the ISC is probably your problem.

A missing vacuum line that is not plugged at the throttle body could cause the unstable idle, if you plug it and the car idles fine then it was just an air leak. If it was the CAS (crank angle sensor) the car would misfire when driving and could run noticeably rich or lean.

is the ISC similar or the same as the ICM???

I THINK I have a problem with my cps... Except my car turns over and wont start at all... I think if it was your cps your car wouldnt start at all... not sure though. Thats what code popped up for my car.. Maybe the guys above are right about the isc... Check that out.

OH NO!!! CW!!! I sure am seeing alot more people with this lately... I think the cars that were the rare low mileage DSMs from a few years ago are finally getting to that point in there lives!

good thing i just read this now, and not while my car was down, because that would have scared me even more, because I had the slightest thought of that dreaded word as well, but never mentioned it...hah.... BUT I now got my car back and it WAS the cps... Runs puuurrrrrfect for now
