Yes.... I did check the FAQs. I have spent over 2 hours reading forums and links so gimme a break--I got some questions! Here is my little story.

I have owned a 97 Eclipse gst for less than a year. It has 57,000 miles with a manual tranny. It is currently CRANK-WALK FREE! Anyways, a couple days ago I was posting on my local area import forum. I wrote a little bit about my DSM and how I expect it to be my ride for a long time. Well, Some other guys posted about crank-walk and how I am pretty much doomed. Fore the record, crankwalk was not a new concept to me. I knew all about it in DSMs long before I had my own. But one thing now has me spooked. "KOUin3" responded to my posting with some freaky stuff. He told me all 2G (Eclipses with the 7-bolt 4g63) will enventually crankwalk. ALL 2nd gens?! Not cool. I would normally just blow off a post like this. However the response was posted by KOUin3; he is one of the staff members for the site. Also, he is connected in one-way-or-another with KOU motorsports; for those of you who don't know, KOU motorsports is one of the premier DSM tuner shops in the midwest. They know there stuff! I have never had them work on my car, but their reputation around here is very high. They will tune anything, but their specialty is in DSMs.

Needless to say, I want a second opinion. I refuse to be resigned to the fact that my DSM will one day "walk". With all that said (dang that was alot!) here are the questions I want answered....

A) do ALL 2Gs eventually crank-walk?
B) How much does it cost (aproximately) to fix crankwalk?
C) What must parts must be replaced?

That's like saying your speakers will eventually blow.
Yes, crankwalk happens. HOWEVER, most people blame normal problems that can be easily fixed on crankwalk. It's not as common as people make it out to be so don't let your self get spooked.

7bolts aren't as strong of a motor as a 6 bolt is, soooo if you're looking to do some serious tuning you need to get a 6bolt. If you're not going to try and make your 7 bolt run 11's, don't worry about crankwalk.

When I first got my DSM I was pretty scared of the infamous crankwalk._
I talked with one of the mechanics at the Mits. dealership I was getting the recalls done at and he said, "I've only seen 5 cars with crankwalk since i started here in 98."

Now I don't know how many eclipses they've seen, they might have seen 10,000 or they might have seen 10.

From what I understand, If your going to get crankwalk your going to get it, modifications or none.

True but no. Just like any motor, the more you mod, the faster it blows up :) LOL

You increase your chance of crankwalk with modifications. There is a company out (forgot name) that claims they solved the infamous CrankWalk problem. Might be worth checking out if you're interested.

no crank walk does not happen to all dsm. and i agree you shouldnt worry to much about it unless u plan on running 11s, but then again almost any car that would run 11s would need to be watch for problems

7 bolts aren't as strong/reliable as 6's because of the elevated possibilty of crank walk. But are there other significant factors in addition to this one?

heres the deal. Keep 1400 ready at all times in the bank if your that worried about it. so after you mod the shit out of your car and if it does CW, you can just swap all your crap over to the 6-bolt. other than that, DONT WORRY ABOUT IT! I dont.

Parts cross over from the 7 bolt to the 6 no problem? I mean, I don't think there would; they are both 4g63's, but I dodn't know for sure.

all bolt on parts should cross right over, i.e. turbo, manifolds, piping, im not sure about internals tho. Go to slowboys site and look at the parts you want and if you see a scroll option on the side for 1g or 2g then those parts generaly cant be reused/swapped over.

the person who told you every 2g crankwalks should just kill himself, never take advice from him again, ppl who talk about CW and dont own a 7bolt are ####ing idiots who dont know shit about them. Ive said to so many people its getting old now, CW is over exagerated any car can CW. If you want to play it safe check how much play your crank has every 10,000miles and replace the bearings before u #### up ur engine block thats all.

P.S. you need to kick that guys ass or hit him with your car

LOL! WOW, that is by far the best post I have ever seen. Thanks for posting some postive responses; I need the support cause on the other forum I am kinda outnumbered. Don't believe me? Check out the link I supplied at the top. It will take you to that other forum. Be prepared, reading it is almost comical!--those guys are truly set in their ways.

eff crankwalk.. our cars probably have one of the higher risks of crankwalk, but it is seriously overexaggerated.. i personally wouldnt worry about it, like said above.. 1400 bucks if it happens, and its fixed. My car is running strong at 130,000 miles, no CW. I saw an eclipse the other day with 190,000 on the bottom end.. Every motor goes eventually.. dont worry man. Just save a little extra cash in case of an unlikely emergency. Also, i recommend when upgrading your clutch, to go with a clutch that uses a higher friction coefficient disc instead of crazy strong pressure plates... better for your thrust bearing.

Christ, do we really have to churn through this cesspool again?
It's very often a mistake to use "every" and "always". You could almost say it's always a mistake :D
Interesting that they're sold on Magnussen's hypothesis. I'm not. Which doesn't make me right. (I wonder if tying down the center bearing with the girdle was a mistake.)
However, it's a different forum. We don't really give much of a shit about what they say on other forums. Right or "wrong". Look at how much nicer things look here with all our pesky rules.
And it's clear that our members are far and away a much brighter group.

Leave them to theirs.

You guys get another few hours to shoot the breeze about this, then lockdown.

Don't disrespect other forums. And don't count on us to send in the cavalry for you.

I have a '94 Turbo laser that i had to replace a piston in. while i was there i checked #4 for scuffing on the side or bearing damage as i was replacing all rod bearings since i was there. For a motor with 132,000 + miles it sure was pretty. But then again i could have been ignorant and been like that guy in the other post that makes a living swapping 7-bolts for 6-bolts and said that the piston went because my engine is crankwalking, never mind the broken valve i found in the chamber!! bet he dismisses many 7-bolt problems as crankwalk. He can call himself very knowledgable if he damn well pleases but if he has replaced that many 7-bolts for 6-bolts i'd be more inclined to call him kinda shady.....and not Slimshady  i guess they are right.....ignorance is the most rampant disease :barf:

here he goes again with the lockdown crap. I swear he has a button on his mouse just to close a thread. ROFL

:toobad: fun while it lasted.

# 1 ANY ENGINE CAN BLOW A THRUST :shhh: .#2 COST DEPENDS ON HOW SASSY YOU WANT THE ENGINE :tease: #3 THE REPAIR CONSISTS OF MODS TO THE BLOCK,CRANK , A HARDENING PROCESS, SHELL BEARINGS WITH INDEPENDENT THRUST BEARINGS, MAIN CAP ALIGNMENT, LOWERING THE TEMP OF #3 MAIN SADDLE, :thumb: THIS HELP?
THANKS

Crankwalk is blown out of proportion i have a 95' gst with 118,00 miles and i have no problem. Jusy because you own a eclipse doesnt mean you will crankwalk.

Everytime I see someone say they had a motor crankwalk I always ask what the end play was when they measured it. In all my time on this board only ONE person has answered and they indeed had a very nad case of CW. All the others just used it as an excuse for blowing up there own shit.

I hit a cat in the street and my car doesnt run, it must be CW.

Dont worry about it and if you plan on making big power then slowly buy up some 6 bolt parts and build a spare motor. Once you are done you can swap and be done with it.

1. Not all 2g's will get crankwalk
2. A 2g could get it at any time and theres really no way to know unles you take your engine apart to check
3. A huge clutch will increase the liklihood (ex act 2600) of getting it because it will put more stress on the throwout bearing
4. launching all the time with AWD will increase the liklihood
5. get a 1g motor if it happens

The reason 7 bolts CW is:

6 bolt Crankshafts are hardened to a depth of .030"
7 Bolt Crankshafts are hardened to a depth of .003"

6 bolt mains are Wider than 7 bolt mains, therefore able to withstand alot more horizontal load.

The #3 main on six bolt blocks run alot cooler oil temps than 7 bolt blocks. I wanna say I heard 190 something degrees versus over 200 on the 7 bolt.

For alot of reasons 7 bolt engines are better, and for alot more reasons 6 bolts are better.

Is there a solution to Crank Walk on the 7 bolt engines? Yes. Does it have anything to do with the MAIN GIRDLE....No.

Wanna argue with someone that knows what their talking about? Call 518-638-2311

$$ can solve your CW problems.
