Ok i got a quote from the local machine shop and they want 100 to grind my crank and 35 to polish it... Not only that i dont know what size bearings to buy being as my car is my dd and i cant tear it apart to see how much machine work will be needed on the crank. A new crank is 170... my question is can i buy a new crank and not have to get it machined? Can i buy a new crank and standard size bearings and it all just go straight in? thanks in advance.

Whats wrong with your car for you to need a new crankshaft? In theory, yes you can just buy a new oem crank and standard bearings and be ok. However, if you spun a bearing and your connecting rod was damaged along with the crank then you cannot just throw new bearings onto the bad rod because youll just run into this same problem not far down the road.

It's usually best to order parts after the machine work is done. The machinist can tell you what he had to do to get things squared away, then you can order parts based on that.

Well the reason I'm avoiding ordering after is because I'm going with howell's long rod bottom end kit and it's my dd, so I have to order the kit and plan ahead since it's my dd. And the reason I say new crank is cause my car has 188k on the motor and for the extra 50 bucks I could a. save time not having to have mine machined b. Not have to worry about buying bearings and needing a bigger size and c. Have the security of knowing I have a new crucial part in my motor.. So if I buy a new crank I shouldn't need to be ground or polished or anything?

I... don't think you need to worry about your crank going bad? I mean, I don't know the 420a very well but as far as I know cranks were built to withstand the abuse of the engine running...It's not like it's going to fly apart or burn up like your clutch does.

It is sturdy, however i am running a long rod kit and will be boosting soon, those two put together equal hard stress on crank, and it just seems smart to replace it because of the points listed above.. It would actually save me money to buy a new one instead of having to buy 2 sets of bearings and get my crank machined. It would just save me time to buy a crank ready to install..
