Crank Pulley Removal...HELP!

Hey all, I seemed to have worked myself into quite the quandry. I rented a 3 jaw puller from Autozone and have removed the pulley as laid out by many of your threads. Thanks!. In the process, I inserted a 3/8 drive extension into the crank bolt hole for the puller to push on. (sound weird to me too). Now, said ratchet extension is stuck in the bolt hole!:( I realize damage to the treads inevitably has been done, however I still need to get it out. Any suggestions? I have tried brute force to the Nth degree with no luck. Your experience, insight and/or ingenuity would be greatly appreciated.

so from what i understand you pulled the pull off but now you have a 3/8 extension stuck in your crank. if i am right then try to put a pair of vice grips on it and pull it out. if it comes down to it you can try to heat up the crank and maybe it will come out

Yes you understand correctly...albiet it hilarious to think about and equally to see.
I have tried Vise grips-No dice.
I have put my ratchet on the estenstion for grip too-No dice.
Heating is not a bad idea. Unfortunatly I live in Michigan were it is close to 40 degrees in garage. I will give it a whirl.

Put a pair of Vise-Grips on the extension hard as hell, and use a screwdriver or chisel between the edge of the VG jaw and the surface of the bolt head.

Hmm... the same thing happened to me a long time ago. Fortunately this was on a spare block. Needless to say, the extension is still lodged firmly in the crank. Mine also broke off, though, so you're somewhat lucky.
 
Man i'm glad a got a 4g63....dont have to mess with that press on crank pulley business. 4 bolts....done.

I remember helping a buddy install an underdrive pulley on his Neon. Wow....first had to buy a puller. Then after wrestling with that for a bit, we had to heat up the new pulley in the oven for a bit and then install it quick before it cooled down.

I would attach vise grips and torch it up. Once it's out, run a tap down to clean the threads up. You should be ok as long as you can get it out. Worst case heli-coil. But that's all easy stuff....just gotta get it out.

Tapping it out like post above is my first suggestion. If that doesnt work. Buy a cheap dent puller. The slide hammer type. Have someone weld the dent puller to the end of the extension and slide hammer it out. It will come out and you might find the threads are not damaged.

You probaly just got the normal 3 jaw pulley remover from AutoZone. Go back and tell them you need the one for Chystler (however it's spelled) motors. If you need the part number let me know.
 
I just got your pm. I tried using a pair of vice grips on it ( tight as you possibly can). Then I turned the vice grips counter-clock wise ( like unthreading it) and pulled at the same time. You will need to block rotation of the crank somehow. I got mine stuck with the pulley on so I just jammed a bar between, but if you just have the gear there you might need a pair of Jesus pliers. This wasn't so successful but it might work.

If the side which the socket wrench is facing out, the open square end, I also used my impact wrench to knock it loose and it just twisted loose and It came out easily after that.

Good luck man. When I got mine out I threw it as far as I could down the street. My threads were messed up, but I was still able to use it. You probably won't be able to use the bolt to put the pulley back on ( as in using it to pull the pulley back on the shaft, it should still hold just fine though) because the threads will probably strip VERY easily,so I hope you have a BFH lying around.

P.S: next time use a 1/4 in extension :p that is what I learned.
 
since this thread isnt too old....

why are you guys putting something into the hole to push against?? The first time I removed a crank pulley I used the stock bolt that was already in the hole....

Because sometimes when your using the puller, the stock crank bolt is kind of short, and by using a longer bolt you can get more force on the pulling action of the pulley, and I think its supposed to reduce damage to the threads.
 
DUDE I got the same freaking problem, exept the pulley is still there and my 6" extension won't come off i spray a lots of wd-40 and brute strength and not luck so then I bought some bp blaster and still nothing it's too dark to do anything now but i'll post some pics up later, you think a heat gun will work?

I don't think a heat gun will get it hot enough, you'll most likely be better off using one of the methods previously mentioned. A torch is the best method to heating up the crank or pulley. Just be careful to not hit the rubber and melt it.
 
Something else to try is use a slide hammer to reduce thread damage. using the vice grips will twist the extension against the threads. with the slide hammer you only have outward force instead of side force on the threads. I would advised against heating up the metal, it will expand the extension (since metal expands in heat) faster then the bolt hole and make it more difficult. Dont forget WD-40 to help
