Cracked valve cover [Merged 4-8] crack

If you are going to replace the valve cover you by want to find one from a Hyundai. They are much beefier and thicker that the DSM ones.

Piece of advice when installing a valve cover. I found that by putting a socket on a longer extension, you can tighten the valve cover bolts enough just with your hand so that they don't leak. I decided against using a rachet and just tighened them by hand using a socket.

I would be on the safe side and weld it. Even though it seems like a small issue you might as well fix it right and arrest the problem.

Or follow the torque specs, its worked well for me so far

take it off and send to be welded by a shop ... not very expensive....

JB weld ? no sir ...

I also had the same problem with my powder coated VC. I installed the bolts as specified earlier in this post, from the inside out and only hand tight. Not ham fisted, just tight enough to where the gasket was starting to squish... and ping, the upper right plug-well bolt pinched it just enough to put a hair-line crack in the corner of the VC. I'll add pics to the bottom of my post. At first glance, I just thought it popped an air bubble in the powder coating or split the coating, until I inspected it further. Nope... it was only a sliver while it was off the car and turned into a valley when tightened down.

The first pic is of the crack and oil getting through, the second is a pic after I used some JB Weld (very carefully).

The VC still leaks pretty bad. So, tonight I plan on grinding some of it out from the inside and going at it again with a little bit thicker bead of JB Weld. See if that works. It seems like it almost needs to be streched or bolted down in order for the JB to settle correctly. That's a pretty hard task to accomplish, where the crack is on my VC. It's a very tight space to get anything thin enough to apply the JB while it's on the motor. I guess I'll ahve to come up with something. In the meanwhile... I have another VC on order (ebay) from VA. Not a pretty one like mine, but it will do until I can get this one fixed.

Feel free to laugh at my misfortune. :tease:
