I thought I heard a small exhaust leak from under the hood so I pulled the heat shield off and there is a small crack on the top of my manifold. I can see a little bit of white color around the crack is this a serious situation? Will it cause a loss of psi? And will it be ok until the summer when I get out of school and can save money to buy a new one?

Thanks,
Chris :laser:

who knows if it'll hold till summer, it might or it might not. You can get a 2g manifold to replace yours, or try to weld yours. Then there's always the aftermarket route ( expensive).

Will I see a gain in hp if I go this route?

manifold isn't really a place where you pick up hp, maybe if you ported and cleaned it a bit but I doubt it. The reason to swap 2g manifold is because they're not as prone to cracks as 1g are.

Thanks for the advice. Do you think this small crack will be ok as long as it doesnt get worse or could it harm something?

There is one crack about an inch long and another smaller crack about 1/4 of an inch and there both on the top.

The crack will only leak, no harm in that, but if it gets bigger, it'll make lots of noise and of course you will probably start smelling the exhaust from the engine compartment in the passenger area. Too much Carbon monoxide and you will harm yourself, not the car. It can kill you and I heard that it takes a while to leave your system (Blood cells) over time it can build up. You can get a 2G manifold from the junkyard, run the risk that it too may be cracked (though they are less prone to cracking) or buy a new Evo manifold (Currently $190 from Slowboy Racing) They are much more resistant to cracking than both 1G and 2G because of the higher nickel content. Plus they flow more in stock form. You can also try welding it, but it may not hold long because of the heat cycles the manifold goes through. I have a crack in my manifold (2G) and replacing it with the EVO manifold.

I have been looking at different manifolds and I can get a Evo for a fairly decent price on ebay. Its very helpful to know that they are the most resistant to cracking than the 1g and 2g manifolds.

Thanks,
Chris

No problem. Just know both the 2G and the EVO manifolds are identical except for the bigger outlet and collector area on the EVO. To put both these manifolds on a 1G you will have to port the edge of the manifold to clear I think the PS bracket. I know you have to clear something but just wanted to let you know. You could search for accuracy of this info regarding trimming for 1G installation.
