I'm attempting to replace my Crank Position Sensor (CPS) on my 2g Eclipse. I've got the left wheel and the left splash shield off as well as the harmonic balancer with the belts loosened, but i'm unclear as to how I should actually go about switching the sensors. I had planned on replacing the sensor and the wire, but I don't know how to remove it and reroute it without interfering with all the belts in the area. Also is it necessary to remove the lower timing cover? One step by step says to go under it while it's attached and the other says to remove the cover (which is pretty involved and honestly a little out of my comfort zone.

Could someone provide some direction on how I should move forward.

Last time i did it i didnt even open the manual. What you have to do is pretty straight forward. Its a knuckle buster though.I didnt have to loosen my timing belt or anything. Just some bloody hands afterwards but it was done in under 1.5 hours. 1st time, no book.

Untouchable: He has a 2gb. And i think youre giving him instructions on how to replace the CAM pos sensor anyway. Even if it WAS the CAS he was trying to replace its not on the timing belt side like your 2ga, its on the other side. Or maybe im misunderstanding something........

Your right im a space cadet. I read it to fast and gave him the wrong reply. Disreguard my previous statement. I will be in a corner somewhere beating my head off a key board.

Thanks guys for your quick response. As you might be able to tell from this or my other posts I'm not super familiar with our cars yet and I don't wanna mess anything up. I'm only unclear on those two or three things. Am I supposed to remove the sensor and the wire? and do I need to remove the whole lower timing cover?

Yes you do need to remove the lower timing cover to get to the crank sensor. There are 2 bolts that hold it on. The wire unclips right around the middle timing cover. The sensor and wire are all 1 unit. You can slide it out behind the timing belt like he mentioned. Make sure the belt does not interfere with the new sensor or you will be doing it all over again.

THIS! Untouchable points out something here that is critical: Very important you double, no, triple check that wire and make sure its clipped in properly when installed or that t belt will chew it apart.
Untouchable: Happens to all of us. I hope i didnt come off harshly in my above post, I apologize if i did. I cant count how many times ive edited out stuff LOL.

Btw: MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!!!!!

I know its been a while but I'm back. So after going in to replace the sensor (removing pulleys and belts, etc). I got to the sensor which had been impacted by something. I began to pull out shards of a belt (thinking it was pieces of the old one) but it was fragments of my balance shaft belt which had just been replaced by a shop.

I'm going to go the BSEK route now I suppose, is it possible or ill-advised to just leave off the belt and run like that for a while?

How much would one pay for the labor in installing the Balance Shaft Elimination Kit?

PS. The timing belt seems healthy just a little dark marking around it, the timing component job (with Gates Racing belts) is literally 49 miles old

Your shredded balance shaft belt is probably what killed the crank position sensor. Anyway, you cannot just take off the belt and run it like that. The rear shaft is driven by the oil pump and will give you terrible vibrations if you don't remove it as well. If your belt only has 49 miles and hasn't been damaged, you can re-use it.

What would cause a balance shaft belt to go bad twice in relatively short time? The blue bearing seemed to spin fine.
