Hello there again. I am trying to figure out a knocking noise coming from my eclipse. I purchased it from my work (a salvage yard) when the shop said the motor was toast. Well i listened to it and its not a know it sounds like a slapping noise that goes with the engine speed. I did the old test of pulling the spark plug wires to see if the noise was affected and it was not so i ruled out the bottom end. I had a guy come out here that autocrosses eclipses and neon srt4's and he was puzzed by the noise. He said it sounds like its coming from the intake side of the motor near the head. He noticed that all the bolts for the timing cover were finger tight and the timing belt looked new. He said to check the belt to make sure all the timing markes are right and then to check the balance shafts. He looked at the oil and there were metal shaving in it and he said it might need a balance shaft eliminator kit. Sorry this is so long winded i just want to make sure this sounds right. I was going to drop the pan and clean the shavings out and change the oil filter out every 150 miles for 1500 miles to clean the shavings out. So could the balance shafts make a slapping knocking noise? When i do the balance shaft delete what would you add (new oil pump, water pump, certain seals that go bad?) I just want to get some info on what should be done. I do not know that much about these cars but i am willing to learn. thank you for any help that can be given

Depending if this is a TRUE knock, or more of a light ticking sound, could be many things.

chances are if your timing marks were no aligned properly you would know it, as the car would run bad, or explode.LOL

If its a quiet light ticking that has a pattern to it, could be lifters. If its lifters, give it time it should work itself back to normal. Could also be injectors. My stock 450s, you can hear them ticking away, not loud, but when you listen for them...you know.

If its a TRUE knocking, then it ###### IS rod knock. If that is the case dont expect to get many more miles out of the motor. this is where it becomes tricky.. drive the engine into the ground? or take it apart now to hope it hasn't damaged the crank. Once the crank is marred, pretty much outta luck. I say drive it into the ground, in the meantime look for a 6 bolt to build.:thumb:

might be a balance shaft.

A bad balance shaft bearing could resemble a rod knocking.

Last summer had a BS bearing go bad, before I pulled the motor I dropped the oil pan.
Strange thing was the BS bearing was in the bottom of my oil pan, and I could clearly see where the balance shaft was whacking the block.

Just something to check, it can very well be a rod knock.

Just pull the pan down and look. Manually turn the crank clockwise. If the rods look straight, check the BS bearing. Something died that's for sure. Metal shavings are never a good sign.

well the shavings in the oil are not bering type material. they stick to a magnet so it cant be copper bearings. How tough is it to replace balance shafts.
