I'm considering converting my 95 TSI FWD to manual. The work involved doesnt seem too bad but I'm wondering how much all the parts will cost me:

There seems to be several of you guys out there that have already done this. Could you share your cost with me?

Here are the parts needed:
Shifter Assembly
Shifter Boot
Shifter Cables
Cable Hold downs and Firewall Gasket
Brake and Clutch Pedal assembly
Clutch Master
Clutch Slave
Clutch Fluid Line
Clutch Assembly
Flywheel
Flywheel to Crankshaft bolts
Manual Transmission

When completed I will have the Auto tranny for sale. Any idea how much it is worth?

I dont think I could sell the other left over parts:
Auto flywheel and flexplate
Auto Shifter/cable/boot
Auto Pedal assemble

Thanks,
Joe

After doing some more searching on this wonderful forum, it looks like this conversion is more costly for a 2g than a 1g as donors are expensive to come by.

Looks like I should budget $2000 for this project.

I have a 95 gst and I am alos trying to convert it to a manual tranny, 2,000 sounds about right, but im not sure if you also would have to swap out the axles, some people have told me that you have too and that the auto 4g63 uses three of the tranny mounts as motor mounts, but that the manual doesnt, but that is just what I was told so im not for sure. I would really like to talk to some who has done thin for a 2g gst, but no such luck yet...

I did the swap. Cost me right around 2grand w/ an upgraded clutch/flywheel combo. Also the axles are diffrent. So if yo know anyone looking for auto fwd axles for a 2g i've got some i'm wanting to get rid of.

I have 5spd and my son has auto. Motor mounts are same as far as I can tell, and I have looked closely. Axles appeared to be same, tho I didnt measure them. All FWIW.

keep the automatic and build it up
i spanked some 5 speed dsms already
where i live at everyone saying 5 speed is better (i think so 2)
but after showing them that you don't need a 5 speed to go fast
i decided not to go with that costly upgrade

shift kit
tranny cooler
tranny guage
end clutch kit

and your set

you gotta work with what you have or sell the da thing and get a 5 speed

On an AWD car the front passenger cv shaft is different and the intermiediate shaft on the drivers side is shorter then the auto. Also if its AWD the rear LSD has a different CV shaft on the passenger side but the drivers is the same. Trans bolts to the same spot as the Auto but uses a different motor mount on the top of the trans then the auto they are not interchangeable.

Its best to find a donor car then you get everything bolts etc... I got my donor car for 2000 cdn and parted the car out and kept the trans made enough on parts to pay for the swap.

A built auto can only hold so much power. I had a built auto and swapped once it wouldn't be able to hold the power i was throwing at it. Start searching all the local junkyards for the parts or try and find a donor car, like somoen mentioned above.

what did u have on your built trans and who built it?

I had everything except a stall converter. HiTunedPerformance built it. Sold it to a guy in Ohio about a year ago.

Ok i just purchased a 91 TSI AWD AUTO < how ya like those acronyms. well the first two are at least. Anyway I also found a reallllly GREAT deal on a 91 tsi awd manual, that has been setting a while just like mine. Its turbo has been removed setting in the trunk like the intercooler and piping. My car has 128k on it driven for years by a older woman, This is true, very straight body needs paint but nice interior. Ecu got shorted out, they bought the new Ecu but turbo is shot smoking like a mo fo. So I figure i gotta do the matainance to mine why not get the parts car do the tranny swap use it's turbo ,after rebuild, injectors, ecu have the car i really wanted not just the best deal I could quickly find.
So i figure MOST of my parts i need to buy are in the parts car, besides New Hoses and wires, what else should i buy new. I'm getting the 2600 clutch and maybe a lighter flywheel. The future Mods will have the Power to about 400 wheel. I don't plann on any internal changes except the cams, It appears the engine has had a pretty easy life, being smaller turbo, milder cams, babby boomer lady driver. If i change to a forge alum or 2g pistons whats the cost and is it really worth it if i'm staying at 400 hp this with nitrous, 315 or so without the bottle. Of course it could wait if the donor's tranny has had any serious abuse and needed rebuild. Anyway the stage two of this car won't be happening for another 2 months or so possibly with income tax return. Anyway is it a good idea now to swap or when i do the stage 2.
