Coolant temp too high! Is 220F too hot?

I was out driving fast the other day doing lots of WOT pulls and I noticed my water/coolant temp gauge over the 1/2 point for the first time ever! It wasn't quite to 3/4 but it was on it's way there before I backed off. I turned on my logger and it showed about 220F. My car normally runs between about 190-205F so this seems really high and I don't like the gauge going up there!

I have all new parts including water pump, t-stat, Fluidyne, etc so I know nothing is failing but I think my FMIC is blocking too much air before it gets to the rad.

How much temp is too much in these cars?

i was kinda worried about something similar, i seem to run around 213 when i drive like i normaly do on the freeway, and was wondering if this is a problem.. im not sure if my fans switch on when there supposed to though.. at about what temp should they switch on?

if the fans arent going on in a 1g then change that sensor that is in the radiator and has a wire going out of it to the pass side fan... im about to change it on my car tomorrow

they do go on, but they dont seem to go on for a really long time.. i'll see about that sensor tomorrow.. how much does one cost?

Should be between 180 -190 F.

I have a question regarding fans. In a 2g, does the driver side fan also kick in to cool the car down or only when the a/c is turned on?

I don't know for sure, but the easiest way is to turn your car on and let it idle until you hear a fan kick in. They just take a look and see if one or both are on. If only one is on, turn the A/C on and wait awhile and see if both are on. :thumb:

Yes both fans can come on under these conditions:
At coolant temps higher than 210 the manual says the condensor fan will activate on medium.

Edit: speed has no factor whether or not the condensor fan comes on.

Thermostat doesn't even Open until Gauge Needle is about Straight up - What you are seeing is Normal for how hard you were running it IMO.

Does "normal" = safe? What other 1G owners regularly see close to 3/4 on the gauge and over 215-22F on the logger? Maybe a lower temp thermostat and fan switch would help?

Thanx for the info guys. The reason i am asking is because i havent had a a/c fan since november when i installed my fmic. I have a slim fan but i dunno how to wire 2 wires into the 4 wires on the car so i gotta wait when it gets a lil warmer so one of my friends can help me. (cant ask somebody to help u install a fan on ur car in 20 degree weather)

Did you install a lower temp t-stat or was your old one just faulty?
