so recently my car started over heating. i noticed a small leak and fixed and added some water to the system but i noticed after it got back up to operating temp as soon as the car moved again the needle would shoot up. so i pulled back over into the parking lot to let it cool down and try and drive home while it was warming up and i made it home but im scared to drive it again. Just recently the heater stopped blowing out hot air also. i've already replaced the thermostat so this is making me think my water pump is shot. anyone else have any ideas on what it could be?

fluid level is fine, new thermostat and tstat gasket, filled the whole system with water but it still overheats.

Could be a heater core, or a hg, going out, do a compression test, look for leaks in cabin on firewall for core leakage, easier than a hg job.

hg was replaced about 6 months ago when i bought the car. compression is fine as well. it also used to make a loud whining or squeaking noise which could be the bearing in the water pump as well.

wp possible but then you would have a leak look for leakage on timing side, i had one wp fail, fixed myself, first major job ever. LOL

how hard would you say this job is? i've never pulled and engine or done internal work but that's about all i haven't done. never done a timing belt job either.

i got a manual when i left college at indiana university, and did my tb took a while but wasnt too bad, i learned a lot, pulling engines done so many its down to a science now few hours, i work fast. LOL working on these things is easier the more you do it, like second nature ive done almost evertyhing from, wiring, painting, engine building, just take your time.

i know how to bleed a coolant system. i haven't checked my heater core yet or the heater hoses but ill do that tomorrow since i have off work.

groan, being 18 and owning a dsm dont go well. first my brake caliper seizes while im on the highway, i go to advance auto to get a new caliper and then it starts over heating. these cars show no warning signs :(

Have you done a compression test since the overheating started? Just because the HG was changed 6 months ago doesnt mean it hasnt failed. Just a thought.

Looks like you have a faulty coolant sensor/temperture sensor. It always gives incorrect readings even when the car is running fine.

Check your water pump throughly. Loosen the tension on the belt and reach down and see if you can wobble it up/down and left/right. If thats the case, time for a new one! There's even a little hole on it that will leak coolant if it has gone bad, too.

I always check to see if a thermostat is faulty by just putting it in a pot and boiling the water. If if doesnt open, its bad.

haven't done one since it started over heating. it started about 3-4 days ago and i havent touched/driven the car since, i just haven't had time.

no, coolant temp sensor is fine, the car is over heating, i heard the overflow tank boiling when turned the car off. smoking was coming from out of the oil dipstick too?

welcome to dsm love it or leave i love it good and bad, LOL its only a car, and money.
i love my dsm, driving around my moms 2007 honda accord only makes me realize how much i love it, but when your 18 still in highschool and working a 34+ hour a week job, it's a bit more than just a car and just money.

sounds like the coolant isn't circulating could be a bad water pump .try taking upper radiator hose off and have someone start the car for a short time . if coolant shoots out fast the water pump is ok if it doesn't then the water pump is bad.
