Coolant/sludge/oil/drain disposal -- what do you do with yours?

I have a sludge mix of a little oil and antifreeze. I was wondering where I can dump it. I asked PepBoys, and they told me they wouldn't. Well, if push comes to shove and I can't find a place... oh never mind. We'll cross that bridge when we get to it. I need places that will accept it.

i usually just put it in a jug and leave it at the back door to autozone after hours. i'm sure they dispose of it properly

Take it to a local recycling place. I don't know what they are called but I know there is a place in the city where I live that you can go to take old batteries, oil, chemical waste etc. so people do not dispose of it improperly.

Back in my old home-town, Valvoline oil change places would take it and dispose of it for free, but apparently some people were abusing the privilege, so they stopped doing it. Call up your local oil change places and see if they'll take it off your hands.

In my area, Autozone excepts up to 4 gallons at a time, during operating hours.

I dunno though, I've called around 'cause I have about 8 quarts of oil, coolant & brake fluid...mixed together. All the Autozone/Jiffy Lubes around here won't take it if it's mixed together. I even called the Hazmat place here on base & they said they won't take it if it's all mixed together..so yea. Guess you gotta burn it or something? I know with brake fluid you can mix it with kitty litter then throw it away.

The local river usually works for me.......Im just kidding of course, once a year our local "dump" has a day where you can bring stuff like that, stuff like old batteries, antifreeze, and oil. I usually just put it some place where its not going to leak, or the neighbors dogs wont get at it untill I can bring it up to the dump. Good luck finding some place.

i just take it in to work. we have seperate tanks for oil based stuff and coolant. whenever somethigns mixed it goes in the oil tank, gas from fuel filters, brake fluid, parts cleaner all that shit goes to the oil recyler.

if you have a garage that you get some work done at or whatever see if theyll take it. or put it in a non clear bottle and give it to autozone, if they wont take it put it out back after hours like somebody else said.

Just take it to AutoZone. They don't ask what's in it. Just tell them you have a couple gallons. Most of the workers won't say anything anyway. I know we don't.

Some friends and I had a bonfire at a local park years ago. There were some ricers hanging around and training a pitbull to latch onto a swing and hold until they told it to stop. We thought we'd invite them to join us as it was better than training attack dogs. They didn't speak much english so when they just walked away we thought they weren't interested. 1/2 an hour later they showed up with gallons of used motor oil and started dumping it on the fire. The entire park filled up with nasty black smoke. When we went back to make sure the fire was out it would flare up any time we stirred it.

Nasty, illegal, and totally ruined my night!

Although mixing it with a solid absorbant may be legal, I still would not do that. Think about where it is going. I am surprised the hazmat place wouldn't take it, try a local recycle place or try the hazmat again. Maybe just tell people from now on that instead of it being a mix, just say it is an unknown automotive fluid?

All the auto parts places I've ever been to accept it - put it in an oil container. You can also call your city or county and they have a spot for sure.

To the original poster.....didn't I read somewhere else that you are in Fort Collins now? Larimer county recycling center is just south of town on Taft Hill rd......take whatever you want there for free.

The Auto zones/Advance Auto/Jiffy places can not take it. Its a service we do to help with sales "customer service". We have a 100gal. drum in the back of my store that gets dumped about twice a year. The problem is the tanker that comes and empty's it takes a sample of OUR tank. If their are any contaminents in with the oil (anti-freeze, brake fluid ect) WE get charged for having to clean out the truck which was over 600 bucks! And we just contaminated ALL of the other oil in the tanker.

Take it to any oil change place, and tell them its oil. If they ask about it tell them you blew a head gasket. I work at a place that does oil changes. Everything other than straight coolant goes in the waste oil. I guarentee you that when you change oil all day there are going to be some cars that have coolant in the oil anyways.

There's no federal regulations governing the disposal of antifreeze as it is not officially considered a hazardous waste. However many states have regs in place because used coolant can contain other hazardous materials like lead.

I've been doing a lot of work on my cooling system the last few weeks and have gone through about 6 gallons of coolant, disposing of my mostly fresh coolant in a sewer drain outside my garage. I'm beginning to wonder where I can properly dispose of this stuff. What do you all do with yours?
