Instead of converting a fwd spyder into and awd spider, couldn't you just convert a awd gsx into an awd gsx convertible?
spyders are reniforced in the doors,a pillers, and have a x brace behind the rear seat so you dont get a lot of flex. Making a gsx in to a spyder is way to much work and would cost a lot more than a spyder with awd

Just got done with my awd conversion in my spyder. All you guys are paying way to much for your parts!!! I got all my parts for $1500. Yes that hole list. And another thing you should do is put in Talon awd rear end, it is a little stronger components.

it all comes down to , not worth the money... i think your gona have to live with your FWD or else have a non spyder gsx... unless you pull a cut-top mod off , and make it look nice, that would give you mad props.. but No way in hell its gona happen...

Alltrac, why would you say that after everything that's been said in this thread? Obviously it's been done before, and it doesn't cost that much, especially if you already own a Spyder. This all sounds like a bunch of hardtop drivers hating on a drop-top that will have AWD. I'm planning on getting a Spyder GST when I come back home, and at some point I'll be doing the AWD swap as well, however mine will likely be several years down the road (after I get out of the Marine Corps most likely)

One question however, if you've already done extensive modifications under the hood, are there some mods that will have to be removed due to the conversion?

Good Luck, can't wait to see the results.

on the engine no, but the flywheel ,cluth, and tranny.Alecw81 I couldnt have said it better :thumb: and I quote

Im doing a AWD conversion to a GS-t Spyder now the post I saw above from mark at tkr performance is right on the only thing I saw he left out was the plate that bolts onto the block in back of the flywheel the hole for the starter won't line up to the AWD tranny if you use the Fwd plate
so you need to get the AWD plate .

wow i.. was thinking about doing that myself to my 95 gst i'm getting but.. that sounds like a whooole lot of work, good luck though.. awd spyders are sweet :)

sorry I forgot about that I did not think of it sence it is part of the tranny.

I have done spyders and hard top awd swaps at my shop, but is alot cooler to have a spyder that is awd sence there are a lot of haters trying to tell us you can not do it. Then prove them all wrong and see there faces.

stock spyder works at pro street, and he did it to his spyder.

My Spyder has been AWD for about 2 and half years now, great mod, id recommend it to anyone who wants to do it. My car was the first and there are some flexing problems you will encounter, within 3 months I noticed that panels didnt have the same gap as before, or my hood was kinda shifting, nothing a rollcage and other chassis stiffeners didnt cure. Again, if you can find the parts cheap, its worth it. trust me.. good luck!:thumb:

I know a guy in MN that converted his Spyder to AWD. If you want his phone # pm me. Good luck. :talon: :thumb:

The talon rear end is stronger then the Eclipse rear end? I did not know that, how come?

I really don't know.... But we put the mic on a talon axle and a eclipse axle, and the talon axle was bigger. We did this to a few more to see if this was a fluke and it came out the same each time.

That would explain why the big boys race talons. Just a little bit stronger components

I was kidding since there not. A) they both have the same rear end and are limited my the width of the axle directy ousite the diff where it breaks, B) there the same year for year and you found a fluke C)there were built on the same assembly line with no distinction between parts
D)most of the big boys races talons because they're rednecks.

Well I got the GST spyder AWD convertion done and its been on the road for 2 weeks now with no problems. All in all its was not that hard to do just labor intensive. On the first test drive I couldent get over how soild the car felt and wondered why MITSU. dident build this car in the first place. The only problem I had was I made the mistake of letting my girlfriend drive the car before my customer came to pick his car up. Now she wants me to put one together for her. Id say to anyone thinking about doing this convertion to go for it you won't regret it.

what about a 1g fwd to a awd conversion would it be as hard or do you still need gas tank and the other big things

I'm about to do the conversion on my 97 GST. Anyways, I noticed on the parts list the starter and clutch.

I know the flywheel and starter plate on the block is different, but I thought the starter and clutch were the same (from what I could tell on CAPS).

Thanks in advance,

You can use the starter and clutch p. plate assy from the Gst when you do the convertion the flywheel is bigger and the trans bellhousing moves the starter so you also need the gsx starter plate your biggest problem beside cutting into the frame to install the longer mounting bolts for the rear diff assy is coming up with a mounting plate for the rear driveshaft
piller block Mitsu left that part of the body out on the Spyders and the wireing at the fuel tank is not plug and play so you will need to come up with a plan for that also
