Converting a 1g tranny to 2g?

Do the internals of a 1g tranny fit in a 2g case?

Basically I need a 2g tranny, since mine was stolen. They're impossible to find for a reasonable price, and I don't want to go through the trouble of fabricating mounts to make a 1g tranny work in my 97 gsx. So it just occured to me that maybe I can just get a 1g tranny and swap on a 2g case, maybe even just a 2g bellhousing (I forgot if the front and rear mounts are on the bellhousing or not), and drop it in.

Am I dreaming?
 
Not gonna happen dude. 1gs are what you could think of as a prototype. 2gs have updated pieces including larger bearing races shafts and newer shifting mechanisms. Thats why the case is different on the outside. Have I ever tried? No. But some things are a given.:dsm:
 
If it was just the bearings, that could probably be fixed :) But if the shafts are all rearranged and shit, it's a lost cause...

From what I've found out, the only real differences seem to be the shifter mechanism and rails.

I actually need to put 1g internals in a 2g case, just to get that straight. Can I simply just swap a 2g bellhousing on a 1g tranny?

I did some CAPS search, and surprisingly, the tranny cases are all the same from August 92 on, except for the bell housing part number. Ian, you're saying the differences are not big enough for the 2g bell housing to not fit on 1g stuff?

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I don't HAVE a tranny to try this on. I made that statement form my research. I needed to find out what I was getting into before actually buying a 1g tranny.

I've been talking more to some people and searching through caps, and it seems like the 2g bellhousing should fit fine with a later 1g tranny after all. Even though there's many revisions, most part numbers cross over between late 1g and early 2g's, so there can't be a drastic rift between the design of the 1g's and 2g's (unlike you said, mr realhp :p ). If you watch the part numbers, you see that it was a steady evolution over time, rather than a major redesign between 1g and 2g. The shifter mechanism for example changed somewhere midway through the 1g production (that's why I'm thinking I might be better off starting from a later 1g tranny).

I'm gessing the only reason the bellhousing has a different part number between 1g's and 2g's is the additional mounting points for 2g mounts.
 
just swap over all three shift rails and your fine. I would suggest also swaping over all bearing races too allthough it is not absolutley necessary. Dont forget to shim it too.
