I did a compression test again today and my resulsts are better than I expected. This is without oil #1-185 #2-180 #3-185 #4-185. I then put some oil in the cylinders and they are #1-200. #2-200. #3-205. #4-200. What do you guys think? I'm getting white smoke out the back and it smells like oil burning. I'm going to do the headgasket really soon.

where are the valve steam seals? I was going to have the shop clean up the head and put new seals in it and see if I need to have it machined.

The seals are wrapped around the valve stem.. well, kinda.. you would have to see it to understand.. its within the spring, and around the valve.. kinda.. LOL

If there is oil in your intake piping, intercooler, intake manifold, etc., then you have oil leaking from your turbo.. If not, check the valve seals..

its funny that u say its great numbers ### the car has 165,230 miles on it...so i was kinda iffy about the results...i was happy though...

ive been ordering all the parts to do the headgasket with the timing belt and all my other belts...how will i know if its the head gasket or the seals?

I guess I thought it was the hg because the white smoke. I'm going to check my turbo tomorrow. How would you recomend that I do it?

Just check the intercooler piping/throttle body/intake for oil...It will be obvious.

If it was a head-gasket you would have cooling problems and problems with the coolant being pushed out of the overflow bottle.

Stem Seals!!! i wouldn't touch the headgasket unless its absolutely required. good luck to you. oh, yea check the PCV valve. those go bad alot and can push some oil into the intake manifold

I dont want to take the head off but I need to do the tb and water pump. But I was thinking that autozone rents tools for free and they have the valve compressor tool so I wouldn't even have to take the head off to do the stem seals. What do you guys think?

I believe you do need to take the head off to do the valve stems.

You want this model of valve compressor:
Amazon.com: OTC (OTC4572) Large Valve Spring Compressor: Automotive

I would utilize this opportunity [if you do pull the head off] to go ahead and pull the motor and have the cylinders rehoned and re-ringed... and maybe up grade the rods, etc... Also either get new mitsu head bolts or go with ARP studs [can be used more than once] but do not reuse the old head studs.

I was reading on the forum and I know I can do the valve stems on the car but I need a special tool

Yeah, I was going to say, I don't see why you'd have to take the head off... as long as you have some kind of tool that can compress the valve springs.

yeah i just got one from napa for 55 bucks, and it also comes with the air hose so the valve doesnt fall in when ## working on the spring...so im going to tackle the problem really soon...i know im going to have to take off the timing belt. do i have to mark the cams or do i just take them off?

I would take the cams out. MAke sure the tool you bought will fit in there and not hit that wall where the spark plugs are in. The tool from advanced auto did not fit. I went to the shop and had all the steam seals installed for 30 bucks.

He also discovered 5 valve guides worn and I also replaced those 5 valves because the chrome coating on the steam had worn off becasue of the bad guide. Lucky for me I had all the parts and only had to pay him the 30 bucks to install.

95 did u take the head off yourself or did the guy do it with the head on? i really dont know if this tool will fit in the tight spot but i hope it will because im really not wanting to take off the head.......sorry i put 96..my iphone gets stupid sometimes and like to spell other stuff..

I took my head off myself, I can accually get the small C shapped clips on top of the valve steam without the tool, I use needle nose plyers and a wrench that fits on top, But this takes forever. A friend told me slowboyracing ahd the tool once. Check there, but I have heard lots of people say some tools they buy wil not work on our heads.

The guy who does my work has a machine that does it.

Well I took off the valve cover to see if the universal valve tool will work and apparently it looks to be a bit big. Does anyone know which tool will allow me to perform the task of changing stem seals with the head on the car? And can someone post a pic of how the seals look please, just so I know I got the right ones? Thanks
