The connector for the coil pack has a ground of its own.
Which pin might that be?

A 90 coil pack has 4 pins, 1 for 12v, 2 to the PTM, and 1 for the tach gate.
A 91 + coil pack has 3 pins since the tach gate is part of the PTM.

The two pins to the PTM are the "grounds" for the coils.

Is that a similar setup compared to the 2G turbos? If not, how does it differ?

I have a degree in electronics and produce my own ignitions and have for awhile now. I know what the original poster was getting at with his question, and that is why I gave him the answer that I gave. I really dont feel that I have to get into intricate electronics that most people would'nt ever understand on here. What he was shooting at was "Can I use my coil packs without having them bolted down to bare metal" and the answer is yes, because they ground in other ways through the connectors.:dsm:

Entire ignition systems can be.:) Would you care to technically explain how a step up transformer works then? How about a fly back transformer from a crt display, since they are similar. Lol :dsm: :D

Would it serve any purpose in this thread? I didn't think so.

What I was objecting to was the fact than somebody is going to come along, read what you posted and expect to find a ground on the connector for the coil. Worse would be for them to add one and not understand why the ignition fuse kept popping.

I had a couple of people this week think that the coil was grounded and the power was what was switched. So for all I know the OP had the same idea.

"I had a couple of people this week think that the coil was grounded and the power was what was switched. So for all I know the OP had the same idea." Gotcha, but I'm pretty sure this one knew what was going on. Good luck

So I could bolt up my coil pack anywhere I wanted if all connectors and wires reached?
