I was driving and when trying to engage the first gear at a stop light, the clutch pedal went all the way and stayed stuck. I pulled it back and I was able to shift without any problems. It hapened twice before I got home. I checked the clutch master cylinder and there was a small leak inside. I manualy pushed the pedal a couple of times and what I saw puzzled me. The return spring seems to be pushing the pedal in instead of back if the pedal goes too far in. Isn't the spring supposed to pull back the pedal regardless of its position?
I have check the threads and some people had the same problem but I can't find any explanation or reason why the recall spring pushes in the pedal it is supposed to pull back.
Could it be that the return spring is defective and should be replaced too?

Mine does this too, however it will only do it with a hydraulic leak. My clutch pedal assembly is bad, however it's livable as long as I don't have any leaks. So just inspect and replace as necessary and bleed it and see how it works for you!

Mine is leaking too but it is very little. I just don't have the time to replace the master cylinder right now but I wonder if the return spring is "bad". I had a leaking master cylinder on another car but it just does not push the clutch and I could not shift. The pedal felt mushy but was always returned by the spring. In this case it is really pushing the pedal in; like something is sucking that cylinder. I am sure it is the spring that is pushing it in and that is why I am wondering if I should change it.
Is the spring supposed to rotate at its attachement point to the frame? When I pushed the pedal I noticed that the whole spring rotate and moves downward below the cylinder rod axis if pushed too far. When I stopped pushing the pedal, the spring wanted to come back but because it was below the center line of the of the cylinder rod, it shifts from pulling back to pushing in! I don't know if this is the way it is supposed to work or if the return spring is defective.

Thats how my spring is too, im pretty sure thats how all of them are,
im guessing to make the clutch easier to engage.
the majority of drivers like soft, comfortable engagement pressure,

but thats just my guess.

Any more thoughts and suggestions about this problem?
I know I will fix it by changing the clutch master cylinder but I would like to know if the return spring is defective or not so I won't have to do the work twice.
Thanks for any input.

Hello, my clutch pedal is doing this too... I removed my new master cylinder because of all the problems Im having with this clutch pedal going to the floor. With no master cylinder in my car i pressed the clutch pedal down.. The pedal starts off as trying to stay up. After about 1 inch of travel the spring pulls the clutch pedal to the floor. Remember, i dont have the master cylinder installed... So i can say this must be a normal thing. My problem was when I press my clutch pedal in very, very slowly. I would say about 1 inch, my master cylinder would lose all resistance and the pedal would fall to the floor. I have tried this with the car running, car off. It just dosent matter, If the pedal is pushed in slowly about 1 inch all pressure is lost on my new master cylinder. I have bleed the thing countless times. I saw the video on bleeding and nothing works. Has anyone had problems like this with some type of resolve? Can someone with a working clutch go out to there car and slowly press the clutch pedal in with your hand about 1 inch. I want to see if my master cylinder is bad...

I tried the same test but with no fluid in the system and it behave as you described it. That is why I asked the question about the spring. In my opinion, and with the system filled and bled properly, the spring should retrieve the pedal not push it under any circumstances. I still wonder if what is happening is normal.
You need to check the slave cylinder as well; It may be bad too. I have read a thread here where someone recomended to change both master and slave cylinders at the same time to avoid any surprises. I have not changed mine yet but that is what I will do.
