Background: My car has been making a clicking sound under the hood for a while that I hadn't gotten around to checking out. I'm pretty sure it was drivetrain related. My clutch pedal was adjusted, but for some reason it was inconsistent. Sometimes it engaged about an inch off of the ground, and sometimes it wouldn't engage until it was about 3 inches off of the ground. I never launch this car or shift hard...ever.

So I was out driving the car this morning and put the car in third gear. After being in gear for a second or two, I floor it. I make it up to about 3000-3500 RPMs and CRUNCH!!! I hurry and take it out of gear and roll to a stop, the grinding and crunching sounds of metal going the entire time. I get under the car to inspect it and there's no fluid leaking. I still haven't been able to look under it for any other signs of breakage due to work. With the car off, the clutch still feels normal and the car will go into all gears as usual.

What can I look at to narrow down my problem? What tests can I do short of taking my tranny out?

Well, pull the transmission out. That is your main option to actually deduce the failure. It could be a destroyed TOB, a destroyed clutch, or a destroyed transmission. I will put my money on a destroyed inner input shaft or outer intermediate shaft tapered roller bearing resulting in transmission failure or a seized/shattered TOB resulting in a clutch failure along with clutch hydraulic issues as a side component and a damaged or destroyed input shaft sleeve.
