Ok so short and simple...

car is been sitting around not doing anything....

i had a transmission swap recently and it didn't go too well..

first time i turned on the car, clutch wouldn't realease so i couldn't get it in to gears (and if i forced it, it grindsss).... turns out we had to bleed out the clutch..

we bled the clutch... the clutch is now lighter than what it used to be (before i swapped out the transmission) but it lets me put the trans in to gear now.. BUTTT

when i have the car in gear, and i slowly let off the clutch, it grinds and the car does not move... do i need to bleed it out more or is there something else at play?

could an oil soaked clutch be a culprit? bad transfer case? the transmission WAS good, i know that for sure because i test drove it...

there just was a small incident when the car was towed by 2 wheels and the rear wheels locked up... they are not locked anymore and no metal in the transfer case, and the viscous coupling looks fine...

clutch was soaked because i had my rear main seals where old.. BUT it used to work with the old tranny so it should work with my new tranny..

yes, 2wd towing was stupid, already took care of it with the guys and if something is broken they'll pay.. i need solutions, my hatch started to "PING" yesterday and i will be without a car soon..

car has stuck disc and act2100 pp

tranny was used but i test drove it myself and it works, only bad thing a bout it is that one of the bolt hole is broke and i couldn't bolt anything to that... but it was driving fine with the other car just fine..

Did you adjust the clutch properly? Goto Jacks Transmissions LLC — Welcome there are some helpful videos on there as well as a video to show how to properly adjust the clutch.

Your VC is prob bad also being towed and having the rear lock up. I don't know enough about the drivetrain to say any more than that though.

sounds like also may be possible if you need to adjust the shift cables/linkages, i had an issue with this on my 91 tsi..

hmm... i don't know about this one, i can get the car into gear just fine, the problem is when i let off the clutch it grinds so i doubt the cables/linkage is the issue...

so you all are saying i have to replace the clutch? why was it working on the old trans and not working on this new one? i know the clutch isn't going to be good (it'll slip like it used to) but it should still grab, am i correct?

try adjusting the master cylinder and the forks like in Jacks videos, as Liquid said. do that then let us know if it's still doing that.

YOU GUYS ROCK!

i can get the car to move in 4th... when i looked under the hood.. i noticed and remembered something BIG

my car is a 1990 gsx, the tranny i put in is for a 91... looks like the shift link bracket for the 91 does not work (prevents it from hitting any other gears)

so now what? i can move the car in 4th (after burning a shyt load of clutch) so i know everything else COULD be ok... do i just switch out the brackets and call it a day?

my 1990 gsx is a 23 spline so it fit correctly to the 23 spline 91 trans... just fyi

The cable bracket [on the trans], shifter cables, and whole shifter are completely different from 1990 to 1991.

Correct, I have a 91 with a 90 trans and all i had to do what adjust the shifter linkage. Yes it is maxed out all the way, but it works.

Correct way, Replace with the correct ones.

I just didnt have the money at the time. Thanks for this thread! It reminded me what was next up on my to-do's.

When I got my car the bracket on the trans was backwards (which is hard to tell just looking at it, it's very close to being symmetric. I flipped out forever because I couldn't get into certain gears, and I got a set of shifter cables (but they were for a 1990) and I thought the cables were just stretched. Then I just flipped around the bracket one day just for the hell of it (but for a reason I'll explain later) and everything was fine. On my friends 1991 I flipped the bracket around and drilled holes on the gear selectors on the trans to make stuff ultra short throw. I was gonna try to do this to mine just for the hell of it and this is how I found out my bracket was backwards.

No problem!

would anyone point me to the right direction on where to buy these parts? i tried looking on google but i get crap results.. (SOLVED) http://www.thedsmgraveyard.com/product_p/nmb484624.htm

so if im correct, i can do it the mickey mouse way and adjust the shifter

or

do it legitimately and buy the bracket, shifter cables, and the shifter

right?

Is it possible to take the brackets from your old trans and mount them to the new one?

LOL sadly.. no, its too late, i threw it out...

But if i did.. would it work???

i do have another question though..

DSM Graveyard - Your #1 Source for DSM Parts!

Better question... If i decide to the the mickey mouse way do i adjust the shifter or the cables? what am i adjusting? and do i keep the 91 bracket or get the 90 bracket for the mickey mouse way? (THIS WILL NOT WORK, it doesn't work if you have a 1990 eclipse with a 91 trans....)

so i guess im left to buying everything..

so correct me if im right..

i keep my 91 bracket, get the shifter, and get the cables...

that should be it right?

As said previously i agree that if your clutch was soaked in oil your f'ed because the flywheel is surfaced to adhere to the clutch thus gripping and eventually completely sticking and your car is going. Being soaked in a slick residue that cannot grab an you wont go anywhere as for letting off the clutch and it grinding is another issue in itself. But i agree tear it all down and start fresh just be more careful we all learn from mistkes

And to un-a$$ myself without reading the rest it would be best to buy the correct linkage to do i the pro way. But cost effectiness says by adjusting them

LOL I was just about to make a comment about this before I saw that what I was quoting was different from the original post.

Agreed about replacing the clutch would be in best interest but not necessary for the issue at hand. The easiest way to go about it would be to replace the shift cables and the bracket, I believe that a 91 shifter would be an upgrade as it has a "shorter" stock throw but I am unsure about fitment.
