clunking sound

i just picked up a 91 tsi and im hearing a clunking sound coming from the rear sort of a thud it did it when i put it in reverse and sometimes when i put it in 1st also when slowing down and then hitting the gas it will do it but uts comeing from the rear what would cause this sound? thanks

check your driveshaft near the rear carrier bearing and check for free play. If freeplay, check out this vfaq. That is, if this is the syptoms you are describing.
