I have a clunking noise in the front on the driver side of my gs-t. I have searched and found some what of the same symptoms, but not exactly. On the highway its the worst. When I accelerate theres that clunking noise, the more I accelerate the louder it is, but it stops when I let go of the gas or when I slow down and down shift. Also when I drive slow and hit bumps I can hear that clunking noise, and when I turn sharp left. It does not make that noise when I make right turns. I think its the driver side cv shaft/joints. I got under the car and tried to move the shaft, there is slight shaft movement, but no boots are ripped and everything is in contact. I also checked the lower control arms. There was slight play in that as well, but I checked bilateral and same exact play in the other arm. I will buy a cv shaft and pick it up tomorrow, but if anyone thinks it could be something else please let me know!!!! I don’t want to waste my money if the shaft doesn’t need to be changed. If anyone has any tests I could do let me know. Thanks

Try the outer tie-rod end Same thing happened to me replaced it and it was fine no more noise. To check for it jack the front end of the car up and try to move your tire from side to side if there is alot of play back and forth I would say it was bad and change it they are cheap but you will need an alignment after. Either that or bottom ball joints they only made a noise on mine when I hit a bump so I would say Outer tie rod end

I just fixed this problem on my 98 Gst it was my lower control arm ball joint. Go under the car pull down on the car control arm if it moves up and down most likely its no good also check the upper control arm when the tire is on the car grab from behind the tire from the top and pull toward you and if it clunks the bushings are most likely bad.

It could be any of the things mentioned above. If you have checked the tie rod ends for slop and they checked out good. Then most likely ball joints or cv joint. I wanna say you are on the right path with the cv joint though. Also I have had this same clunking sound when I had a wheel that wasn't torqued down good. Hope you get it figured out as cheap as possible.

Good luck..

I see you are posting a lot. Trying to become a proven member or what? LOL You have reached the number of posts required you will become a proven member shortly I would imagine.

dont forget to check the strut mount. sometimes that will rattle when damaged. sounds like the cv joint though.
