Clunk Noise when I give it gas, or take off gas.

Alright guys, this noise just started today, and too me sounds like motor mounts being loose, but im not positive.


When i let out clutch and give the car gas, as soon as i accelerate, the car makes a loud clunk noise that i can hear and feel in the floorboards. Does the same thing for when im cruising, give it gas, then let off the gas. As soon as the rpm's drop, it clunks again. Only once, but does it every time unless i EASE it into or out of acceleration.

If im cruising and just punch it, it definately does it.

Ive had my motor mounts replaced before (just stock ones) about 2 years ago. Does this sound like anything besides mounts? Tranny has been rebuilt too.

This is my main problem, but i also have a problem shifting into gears (especially 1st and reverse). Mainly when cold outside. Reverse grinds alot, and sometimes pops out of gear if alot of pressure is on it (reversing up hill it always pops out and grinds.)

It could possibly be motor mounts, or it could be a half shaft starting to go bad. I would check the front and rear mounts since those take the most abuse.

It almost sounds like the carrier bearing thump that the 1G's are known for. I'm not sure if this will help you but it's worth a try while you have the car on a lift:

I would also get underneath and check for anything impeding the driveshaft or something possibly making contact with the exhaust. You'll just have to get under it and start yanking on parts.

That's not gonna help him being he's FWD. Check the rear mount, I had a similar problem when mine was loose.

Whats a half shaft?

Half shaft is the front drive axle. Theres two of them and the which connect at the front diff.

So pretty much it makes the noise when i first turn the engine on too.

I looked at the front, and 2 side motor mounts, and they look alright, the bushings arent ####ed and the bolts are tight, but wheres the rear motor mount located? Do i have to get under the car to get to it?

How hard is it to inspect these half shafts? what should i look for

Bascially if the rubber boot is torn on the half shafts they are on their way out. Yes you would have to get under the car to insepect the rear motor mount. How many miles on the car?

Also if its making the noise when you start the car I would think its probably motor mounts since thehalf shafts arnt spinning. Put you car up on jacks and try spinning the tires back an forth and listen for the noise or see if you can see anything that would be causing the noise.

My car did the same thing when the bolt from the rear motor mount went missing.
I replaced it and windo-weld 'ed up my front and rear mounts while I was at it.
Problem solved.

Check your rear motor mount, it is located under the heater core coolant tubes, by your fuel filter.
(remove your battery and the throttle cable box thingey - just unbolt it and move it out of the way)
