Clicking while turning right: shop says transmission

Hi DSMTuners, I ventured over here from DSMTalk to try to get another set of opinions on what the heck is going on here. Here goes:

The car is a 1992 GSX, 124k on it, mostly stock except for MBC, UICP, AGX struts, and Prokit springs. The car had the transfer case recall performed in Feb. 2009.

My issue is that something is making a "clicking" noise under the car. Before you say CV joints (this is what I thought) I took it to Midas to confirm that this was the issue. They said all of the joints were fine and that the sound was coming from where the driveshaft meets the transfer case...that something internal was making the sound.

Again, this ONLY happens when I make a RIGHT turn...it DOES NOT happen when I make a LEFT.

Am I missing anything? Is this something to do with the transfer case? Should I be contacting the dealership that performed the recall?

I'm just basing this off of what the shop told me. They said the noise was coming from the driveshaft/transfer case area, but then again they could be wrong. To me, it sounded like it was coming from the driver/front area, but the axleshaft and boots were replaced about 2 months ago.
 
I think if it was the driveshaft, it would do it on a left turn also. Its not like the driveshaft is moving left or right when you turn. I would look more into cv shafts or bushings. When the tie rod was going in my accord it was making a loud grinding/clicking noise when I turned.
 
My money is on the axle, got a vw passat at our shop clicks like hell when turning left or right,especially if you get on the throttle when turning,i know its a bad axle,put it up on the lift and the axle looks fine no broken boot,Don't be fooled by just looking at the axle and thinking it does not look bad.

passat what a peace of VW junk. i just did a t-belt, water pump on a passat had to pull the front clip off and just did a head on a 20valve turbo bug what another peace of junk 45k broke the tbelt and killed the head 3000.00 to get it back on the road. did i tell you VW SUCKS........................:notgood:
 
Could be something with the differential. Put the car on secure jack stands. Have a friend start the car, put it in gear and let the wheels rotate slowly but making sure their foot is on the brake to keep the wheels turning slow. Now grab the passenger tire and stop it from turning. The drivers wheel should continue to turn. Listen to see if it makes that noise when you do this. Now go stop the other side and listen for the noise.

If it makes that clicking noise when stopping either wheel then I would say the differential is shot. So basically You might as well rebuild the whole trans if that is the case.
 
Haha yeah thats how I do it. That is why your buddy has to keep his foot on the brake so the tires turn really slow. Then You grab a hold of the damn tire. It will actually stop quite easily if the diff is working properly.
 
(if) the diff is working. thats a big if, i would press the brake and clap the line to hold the wheel or anything but hold it by hand LOL. thats just me?

c/v joints click

If the boots were torn and water got inside it will damage the cv, so if you replaced the boots, cleaned out the cv and repacked it with grease it wont fix it, replace the cv
 
I'm putting the car up tomorrow morning...I'm going to start with checking the U-joint at the transfer case and the intermediate shaft, then halfshafts. Then go from there if I still don't find the problem.

is it some sort of gong sound? sorta like a spring being compressed and then letting go real quick?

No this is not the case. I know kinda what you're talking about and it is definitely a clicking, no gong. I would hope that I had put the suspension together correctly...it's brand new!

Can't look at the car today...I'm sick with something and I guess I better see a doctor.

When I have a chance or I get better I'll tear into it and do some work.
 
UPDATE:

I replaced the driver's side C/V shaft and the problem still persists...there is still a clicking noise when I turn right, but not when I turn left.

Now that I've eliminated the C/V joint being the problem...where do I go from here?
 
A friend of mine had the problem and it turned out it was some of the bracketing that held everything together, not the shaft particularly. He found out the hard way though because one day it let loose and his timng gears fell against his strut tower (ouch) not sure if it was mount either... Cant remember what it took, but I hope that can help even though its kind of vague... good luck

Not sure what you mean by the bracketing...? :confused:
 
OK so it now clicks when I make a hard LEFT as well, in addition to the clicking while turning right getting worse. Is there any way that this issue could be in the steering? When turning left the sound can distinctly be heard from the pass. side of the vehicle, while when turning right it can be heard from the driver's side.
