I just picked up a 5spd manual tranny and transfercase. 23 Spline. Its been sitting around for awhile, and they guy told me it shifts fine no grinding. So anyways I see the fluid leaking out and its kinda black. Whats the bast way to clean out the tranny first? Is there a way to flush it? Should I just tip it over and let the old fluid leak out first? Or Should I just install it put new fluid in, and after like 500 miles change the fluid until its red or whatever color the fluid i put in?

Also i can't remember but on the transfer case, should fluid be leaking out of the part you connect the drive shaft to? I mean with no drive shaft there of course.

Tip it up with the bellhousing side down and let the fluid all leak out, and when its installed just remove the drain plug and let whatever is in there out. The T-Case is suppose to leak out the rear when the driveshaft isnt installed. :thumb:

Great! Thanks

I know this a awkward question but i'm about to pit my m/t tranny in the car and its filthy whats the best way to get it show room clean. For those with experience shoot me some names of good products to use because the only two things i know are brake/ carburetor cleaner and a wire brush.

can i spray water on my tranny without it affecting anything, i already have drive axle inlets closed of.

pressure washer won't do what you want, I just submitted a how to on cleaning/semi-polishing your tranny, hopefully it'll be approved soon and you can check it out, there are lots of pics..

here's the finished product to get ya goin.. (area under tranny mount not polished)
