Cleaning Mushroom Air Filter

I'm not sure who makes this air filter, but its a big mushroom hks looking air filter. Should I use water? Air? K&N air filter cleaner spray? After cleaning, should I oil it? I wouldn't think so because it doesn't seem as though it is the type that came factory oiled, but I wasn't sure if it would affect performance positively... Any help appreciated...

Is it one of those foam ones? If so, I would ditch it in favor of a traditional cone type filter. I've seen those foam ones fall apart very easily and I would hate for your turbo to suck up the little pieces of foam and cause damage. EBay has the cheap-o cone filters for like 15 shipped. Get one and clean it with K&N oil or the like.

If you want to clean it use water. After cleaning it let it dry THOUROGHLY. Do not use oil as it would be a waste and do nothing for performance as the oil is for a fabric medium not a foam one. I would however go with everyone else on this and say just get a cone type filter. There are adapter kits on ebay for like 4 bucks.

Er uhhhh....mind pointing me to one of these auctions? I've yet to see a genuine K&N filter for that low..lowest I've seen, for the filter only, is about 50 bucks.

We're just talking about a generic cone filter, the only real difference you will see between them is the K&N one has the CARB sticker on it for people in emissions states.

I meant that typically the knockoff filters + adapters are BIN for $4 with $15 shipping. A genuine K&N will run you between $40 and 50 typically.

Sounds good, guys... Thanks a lot! Hey, quick question before I log onto ebay, why is everyone so Gung-ho cone filter? Is it a performance issue or just the safety of not having foam find it's way into my turbo? Will there be able to hear turbo spool-up better/worse? Thanks a lot!

i think the biggest concern is keepin foam out of your turbo, and no a generic vs k&n wont make a sinlge diff

Yes, the problem is the deteriorating foam of your filter. You will not notice a performance difference between K&N and eBay cone filters. The only reason to go K&N would be if you are in an emissions state. Then you would fail visual inspection unless you had the CARB sticker that the K&N filters have.
