I remember the first time I looked at my timing belt.... when I looked at it I tought it was about as bad as my 928S I had. Was not that bad, but it turned out ok and is easy to do after the first couple times around

I guess i was the only one who caught this: how on earth are you going to magnaflux an aluminum head. :laugh:

Well, Magnaflux is a proprietary name for the process of dusting a ferrous part with fine metallic particles, inducing a magnetic field for it, and looking for cracks along which the dust will be collected. It's also good for sub-surface cracks down to about 3/16" under the surface, depending on surface condition, texture, power of the induced field and a few other things.
For non-ferrous metals, you can use eddy current testing, or dye penetrant testing. One is called Zyglow, which soaks a solvet-carried dye into the item being tested. You then look at it under black light and look for glowing cracks. Another dye-penetrant method uses a gooey dark red oily spray which you spray on the tested area, allow dwell time, wipe off with the specified cleaner and a specified rag, then spray on a "developer" which is a white dust that'll cause the penetrant to leach out and leave pink stains.

Because of the company's overwhelming ownage of the market, and the fairly catchy name, "Magnaflux" is often applied to all sorts of crack testing.

I used to be certfied Level II in dye-penetrant and Magnaflux NDT.

D@mn yall!!!! take a chill pill. I didn't say that in means to ridicule. I'm sorry swing low if that came across wrong, but i did not make any assumptions about you i was just pointing out something small and insignificant. Don't get your panties all in a wad. If i was going to single you out with the intent to ridicule, i would have done it with more than one line.

The Magnaflux dust we use at work can only be used on cast heads. If you put the magnet on an alum. head and sprinkle the dust on there, it will just end up on the magnet.

I'm aware that magnafluxing is now used for people who mean to check for cracks, which is what i pointed out with my post.

Ummmm..... Am I the only one who knows this.....

He said that he doesn't have balance shafts anymore.... Therefore you can all forget about the oil pump drive spocket and it's timing mark. you can now place that timing mark ANYWHERE you want as it's sole purpose was to time the balance shaft that was once attached to it!
Please stop telling this guy to move his oil pump timing mark and tell him what he actually needs to do...
Which is, and has been stated earlier.... rotate the exahust cam a bit to put it one tooth off, then install everything. When to belt is under tension, the marks will rotate and line up.

yea that's correct ... no bs means the oil pump can be lined up anyway you want it.
