Cheap Drift Car?

Hey guys I'm new to the forums and new to the whole DSM world and I'm looking for some advice/input. So heres what I was thinking...
I've been looking into getting into drifting for some time now and was looking at the usual RWD drift cars like the Nissan 240sx, the only problem to get a descent amount of power out of these you have to build up the whole engine. So I was thinking why not get a car that can handle respectable HP stock, thus thinking of a DSM. My bro has a 1991 Eagle Talon TSI and he has done just a few mods and he has a good amount of HP for the money he has spent. Now the only thing is AWD. So here is my build thought. If I bought a Eagle Talon TSI (I prefer the look of the 2g) did basic head work (performance valves, port the head), bigger injectors if needed, bump up the fuel pressure and the boost psi (I've heard around 20 psi, what do you guys suggest?), clutch, and ECU. Then I would have some power to play with. Then if I converted to RWD. I can do all the work myself which will cut costs greatly, but I'll have to "beef" up the rear end right? I mean if it goes from AWD to RWD that 2x the stress on the rear. I just dont know what kind of rear end parts I will need, what do you guys think? Also I've heard the steering angle isnt the best but I've seen MK3 Toyota Supra's drift which have bad steering angle and there really heavy. I think it could be done. Any input if this or if it wont work would be appreciated. Thanks!

you are getting in over your head. How many DSM's have you seen in competitive drifting? Yea there is a reason for that.

+1 on using something that like a sr20 swapped 240.

look into the turbo 2 rx7's as well

yup Id go with the 240/silvia with the sr20 swap. My friend just sold his sr20 swapped 240 for 4000 and he has another with an sr20 selling for even cheaper.

Id look into either a 240, FC rx-7, or an AE86 they are all pretty cheap if you find them stock.

240sx and RB26det for big HP and torque. Check ebay tigerjapanese, prices are good they due give motors/trannys a look over make sure its working order before ship. You might want to get their Motor/tranny combo.aka front clip. Once you recieve it make sure the motor turns over or starts before you install it. I've heard people get motors are locked or has blown piston/rod/bearings from this company becuase they dont test prior install, they just toss it hope for the best.

Get an E30 man. Cheap to maintain, cheap to make lighter and an amazing car for drifting. Taka Ono, D1 drifter, drifted my buddy and my custom built E30 and he said he had never drifted something that can get so much angle and opposite lock. Go on YouTube and look up a driver Erick Mahle. He is a really good friend of mine he has had two e30s. One was a boosted 2.5l inline 6 and his latest is a 3.5l inline 6. Both are beasts.

A common misconception of drifting is that you need a **** ton of power to be any good. This is not true. Power helps maintain a drift but it doesn't do anything for the actual drift capabilities of the car. Do some research, youll be surprised what you'll find.

You can weld the center differetntial and plug the front axles. The only issue is finding a stronger rear end that matches the dsm transmission and some stronger rear axles. Thats the easy way. The hard way is putting the 4g63 into rwd configuration. This involves the building of the transmission tunnel, finding a front subframe and steering rack that will work, the 4g63 to toyota transmission adapter bell housing, and so on. Im not gonna be the guy that says "don't do it its too much work" because I hate that response. Yes it will be some work but why always take the easy way out.

240sx+lq4/9=fun ass drift car. Even 302 swapped 240's do well. Any torquey v8, in a light rwd car would be a good time.

3rd gen celica GT. 200sx. 240sx. AE86. Pretty much any old school import car that was RWD. SR20DET or KA24DET are good. I prefer the KA myself.

2nd Gen RX7s are like dirt cheap around where I live. You can turbo that wankel, and you can rev it to 10k.

Do not try and run a Celica GTS. The Independent rear suspension really sucks for drifting. If you can find a GT it has a solid rear axle. I dont know much about what engine swaps are allowed in drifting but a 1st or 2nd gen celica could do well with a solid rear axel, and of course something that has more torque engine wise.

You honestly could drift a totally stock S13 240sx though everyone wants to be able to easily power over. This is a CRAP drifting method. Powering over should only be used to continue and stabilize a drift. I don't know why so many people have to act like you need excessive amounts of HP to drift a RWD car. If you were trying to drift a Evo or a STI yeah, you'd probably want somewhere around 550hp to have a nice long continuous drift.

If you really want to have that higher HP drift car you could always go with a S14. There are a ton of import sites that will ship them to a coastal port just about anywhere in the country for about 6 grand and will build you a title the country will recognize. I just about got a Altezza this way, then looked at a JDM STI for the carbon fiber roof but decided it wasn't worth possibly getting my car stolen since how rare it would be.

There are plenty of rally dsms and gvr4 even rear axle set up drift dsms
Don't put him down for his unique idea just let him know all the work will be in weight reduction,steering angle ,suspension, and it will be just as much work as building your engine up but in different aspects.

I honestly think you should do it I love to see these cars get sideways its a beautifull thing

You can find a 240sx with an sr20 swap sooo cheap now its crazy, they used to be a lot more and just way overpriced but now you can get a swapped one for like 4-5k

Buy a Mitsubishi starion ..... those cars are already turbo...
I've seen them swap to a 4g63 engine .....
It's already rwd, so you won't have to do all the welding and
Plus I know that the tranny of the starion is good for up to
350 HP....

2 words: Mazda Miata

QFT. if you have the funds, source a NB Mazdaspeed Miata as they're factory turbocharged. if not, NA miatas can be found cheap. they're solid reliability wise and mazda sold way more of them than nissan did for the 240sx, making parts cheaper and easier to obtain.

the turbocharged G54B isn't the reason you don't see many drifting starions... the weight balance and steering is. having owned both a 1988 mitsubishi starion and a 2000 Mazda MX-5, I have to say go with the miata if you want to drift. if you want gobs of torque to do burnouts, the G54B starions are a good platform.

I would go with the KA24DET. DOHC 2.4L that can handle boost. Even the SOHC that is in it can be drifted. Just weld up the rear end and go play. Youtube it. There are many people who drift a completely stock car.

I don't want to get rid of my AWD but I also want a 240sx bad. I just don't need anymore project cars.

Get the car and keep it stock for a while, get the feel for it and do your research and then make a decision on power goals.

Comming from the kid that thinks he can make 500hp on 500$....
You can try to go with a starion, i dont know how well it would work for drifting, thats only if you wanna stay in the mitsubish/eagle category.
