I'm wondering if somone could show me a diagram of a 1g AWD drivetrain.

Also if you could make the car rearwheel drive w/o sacrificing any power or messing anything up and I'm sure it would need some modification just wondering what you guys think about this. :thumb:

thinking when i get my awd i'm going to get sponcered and mod my car for drifting.
 
I know that some people have done successful RWD conversions for drag. Unfortunately, the chassis is still based around FWD... it'd be far easier to just take the money and spend it on an MR2 or N/A RX-7, if you want to get in on the latest growing fad.
 
Buy a 240 if you want to drift. You can't make a 1g rwd reliably without reorienting the engine in the engine bay and running a rwd tranny. It'd cost you as much to build a reliable rwd setup as it would to complete a well built 240 for drifting.

Also please don't quote hp numbers for the wrong car in your profile, if you have a 2g don't list the firebird's hp numbers.
 
in this issue of modified i have here, they say this guy in a 2002 wrx put in an active center differencial that allows him to supply all torque to the rear wheels, someone needs to make one for a dsm, then all we need is to find a solid rear end....

That would be the DCCD, or Driver Controlled Center Differential from the 2006 wrx sti. They don't make one for DSM's. There's also a rwd subaru wrx drift car that runs a custom bellhousing and a hollinger 6 speed sequential. The thing is though that the subaru's engine is mounted front to rear unlike our cars. It's much easier to install a rwd transmission onto a wrx than a dsm.
 
bushur has all the things you need to make it rwd.How it would behave with a setup like this I don't know.but noticing the natures of our cars,it would probably be rwd car w understeer. LOL .nah but seriously it would be EASIER/cheaper to do like maviski said and get a tried and true 240 for drifting.our cars just seem to wanna grip,which is a good thing if you ask me.
 
and rear wheel drive isnt "necessary" for drifiting, it just makes it easier. front, rear, all wheel drive, it doesnt matter. it just differs in difficulty and techniques.

its very hard on the drive train parts to drift an AWD car though.
 
i thought that the active center differencial in the 2006 wrx sti was a 50/50 to 33/66 center diff, and it didnt change the car to a completely rwd car. thats just what me and car and driver think though.... and also, the evo has an active center diff that is 50/50-100/0 aka awd to fwd. well the 2005+ ones do at least. i think that if it can be done on one car, it can be done on any, how much money it will take is a completely different story though.
 
wrx's also have their engine mounted longitudinally, so the idea of making it rwd is a little more feasible.
 
the point im trying to make is that this guy uses an active center differencial, which would work with our cars too.

You are correct sir, you can't make it rwd only. But a 33f/66r will handle alot like a rwd car but is easier to correct. Power on oversteer in my friends sti is still very possible at low speeds even stock.

Not so much true as our center diffs are nothing at all like those that are used in a WRX. If you really want to drift a mitsubishi car get a starion or contact Rhys Millen Racing and find out how they made the evo's rwd for the upcoming Fast and Furious movie where the evo plays a major role as a drifting car. There's even a video of him drifting a right hand drive, rwd, evo 9 around the RMR parking lot floating around the internet. OMG

yes you can. some magazine had an article on one a while back (scc, turbo, import tuner- i don't remember which). and doing a google search you come up with a lot of crap (but no link to the magazine article). in the article though, they said they were breaking a ton of stuff, and they were working on an adapter so owners could switch back to awd if they wanted. cobb tuning also converted one over for dyno testing/tuning.
 
It's not like you can just send a letter in and start getting checks from companies to build your car. People Greg Collier who are sponsored have spent years and a ton of money on the sport because they have a true passon for driving. If you took their sponsorships away they would still do what they do now as long as their wallets could handle it.

Not to mention, driving is almost an art and not something you can get amazing at in one summer.

Other than that, you have to convert the awd to the rwd. The engine will have to go from Transverse mount and a new tranny along with a custom drive shaft. The Chassis will need to be beefed up with something like a full roll cage. A lot of work but would be cool. Then if you decided to jack up your HP you'd start breaking stuff like the drive shaft. Someone converted a wrx to RWD and bent the crap out of everything because it couldn't handle it.
 
someone else converted a wrx to rwd and its working fine, actually in this issue of modified, theres one on the cover, and one in an article on something else(maybe two if i remember correctly) along with the story that the cover car is in. so there are three rwd wrx's that did it correctly and have no problems.
