I was wondering, can I improve performance by changing gears on my car, and would it make it faster? I know many american cars need gears, but don't know if DSMs need or could use them.

Just don't mess with the rear differential gears, transfer case or front differential gearing. If you change one of those you will have to change all of them otherwise you will destroy one or more of those components. Transmission gears (1-5) should be ok provided you get the gears from a good source and have a qualified person install them.
