So I bought a full system for my car, headers all the way back including cat-back muffler. It sounds nice idling (other than the silencer rattling which i fixed), but when I accelerate, it sounds so ricey. It has a really high pitch to it, almost like something inside the muffler is rattling (the resonator?).

So, I was wondering if anyone had any thought on this, is it fixable, modifiable, whatever. Or do I have to hear the words "buy another" ? =[

ALSO; It does it with the silencer in or out, I just have it in now because it is way to loud otherwise.

I might be hearing things but if you pay attention it sounds like there is a hissing sound hidden. Most likely you have a exhaust leak some where in your system. So check that and make sure its sealed. For the silencer part. Most of the aftermarket exhaust mufflers that come with a removable silencer, only have 1 mounting bolt. This is not good. It will cause it to rattle and make all kinds of nasty noises. Drill 2 more holes on your muffler tail pipe and on the resonator. You want to drill them forming a triangle of sort. Or if possible you can drill 3 more. And forming a cross with 4 bolts. This way your resonator will stay stable.
Another thing to remember is that your exhaust might sound a bit ricey (as you described the sound) when you add a bigger exhaust. This is do to not having a turbine on your system. Turbos could act as sound supressors. Changing the sound of the exhaust to a deeper, mellow and eliminating the ricey high pitched noise that some inline 4 engines make when upgrading to a bigger exhaust.

It's not leaking, it's coming from inside the muffler itself, the high pitched sound. So it's cause by the cheap muffler, or the engine itself on the muffler? Is there a way to modify the part inside the muffler it seems like thatss rattling?

All 4 cyl non-turbo cars need resonators. Find yourself a nice straight through resonator. It will kill all the rasp n/t 4cyl cars make. Honda's are the worst for rasp, they sound just god awful straight piped.

I know vibrant makes a nice "straight-though" designed resonator. It may even take two resonators and a muffler to make it sound "right". Thats what it took on my n/a cavy anyway.

a resonator outside of the muffler right? sorry i dont know much about exhaust, im still learning alot.

I am running a cheap e-bay header on my talon... with stock converter going to 2-1/2 behind it. I have regular 18 inch resonator and a basic high-flow turbo muffler. I bent and welded all of the pipes myself, and actually got everything from the shop i work at ( except header). My car has a mellow tone and no raspiness to it. It is not overly loud, but flows quite a bit better than stock.

I want quite deep power. Not loud or whatever. So im irritated LOL

He may be talking about a resonator in place of the Cat.

Yah that's what I mean, or on the straight pipe. Is there a stock one because I'm
Looking at the pipe and it seems like it WTF!! (on the straight pipe).

Yes, there are two resonators in the stock exhaust. They're just wider sections of pipe... nothing special.

I have a 95 gs with an obx header and downpipe, an offbrand cat " test pipe"., and an obx cat back system. I removed the silencer and it has a nice throaty sound through the entire rpm range. It is the loudest tuner exhaust where i live which you said you didnt want, but i havent had any issue, just many compliments.

You can always cut the muffler off and replace it with a "name brand" one. This will change your exhaust note quite a bit. A proper resonator or a hi-flow cat is good for killing that rasp. Magnaflow sells at least one for less than $100, and it's emission certified in 49 states (excl. california).

I don't have to pass emission, Illinois anything under 1996 doesn't have to (pre obdII).

And to what the guy above you said, yah I think it's just my muffler, it sounds the like thing inside the muffler(resonator?) is literally rattling like it's loose.

My buddys prelude sounds exactly like your car man. Its his exhaust tip thats makeing it sound like that. So my buddy went out and bought a dc exhaust and it dont sound like that no more.
