Ok heres the rundown, Today I installed a ported 2g manifold, VPE o2 housing and Tial 38mm external wg. I replaced all the gaskets and got new exhaust manifold studs. I started the car and took it around the block, did not floor it. I bring it back to the garage and try to start it 5 minutes later and it just cranks. It gets fuel and has spark but wont start. Ive tried new plugs and that didn't work either. It doesn't sound like the fuel pump is turning on but it smells like its getting alot of fuel? Thanks in advance for any help.

Adam.

I dont have a AFPR yet, and I'm still on stock fuel pump. I checked for spark by putting the spark plug in the wire and setting it against the strut tower. How should I go about checking the rail for pressure? Thanks for the help.

My buddy tried to start it while I listened for the pump to energize. Couldn't hear anything, not sure if thats the best way to do it or if that works but I couldn't hear it.

Also, After pulling one of the plugs I looked down into the cylinder with a light and there looked to be a liquid on top of the piston. Im pretty sure my rings are bad, but im saving for a new shortblock as we speak.

Just a quick idiot check...

You said it smelled very strongly of fuel when you try to start it. Have you verified there are no leaks coming from the fuel system?

According to the Haynes manual, you should be able to hear the pump briefly energize from the fuel filler neck when turning the ignition switch to ON. You can also try squeezing the line coming from the fuel pump (underneath the back seat) to check for pressure.

EDIT: It's not flooded, is it?

I thought that might be the case as well, I took the plugs and wires out let it set for about 10-15min and then tried again nothing, Tried to push start it and wouldn't even fire. Think maybe the pump went out and there was just fuel in the system? Also I did notice a little bit of fuel on the ground after trying to push start it, about the size of a quarter. I need to jack it up tomorrow morning to see if there is a leak in the system. Also could that liquid on top of the cylinder just mean that its pretty flooded? Thanks for all your help Dom.

i had a problem with mine not starting and found out that my cam angle sensor went bad could be the same problem with yours check and see if u have a pocket logger or a scanner but that might be my only guess as to what your problem may be

Thank you 96eclipse, I tried to start the car while checking codes in my logger and it threw nothing. Im stumped.

I primed the turbo for awhile because I'm caustious like that, but it started after that so it should have burnt up all that fuel right?

Thanks I'll try that tomorrow, Also after reading through some threads it seems like I may have jumped timing. Last week twice my car died with no noise no shutdown, and then 10 seconds later it started right up and ran fine. I guess my only option is to pull the top timing belt cover and see if the timing belt is moving while I crank it. I hope I didn't jump timing its a brand new belt only about 6 months old.

I will let you know what I find out tomorrow, Im having a mechanic come over in the morning so I'll have an update by afternoon. Keep fingers crossed I didn't jump timing again! :sosad:

Is there suppose to be any vaccumm hooked up to the top nipple on the Tial 38?

Update* got the car started today, it was just flooded. But now it wont start and everytime you try to start it, it just floods.

Adam,

Since you just replaced the ECU, I'm wondering if there isn't a problem that Jeff didn't pick up on when he tested it. I would drop him a line and see what he says. The only other culprits I can think of are:

CAS
Leaking injector
FPR
Coolant temp sensor

If you have another ECU to test with, I would swap it in and see if everything works like it should. Also, do all of your plugs look the same or is one more fouled than others when you pull them?

Let us know,

Andy

All plugs are fouled. I might be able to pick up another ECU from a buddy and try that out. If that dont work Im just gonna take it to a garage.

Update* The car jumped one tooth on timing. So tuesday I'm going to replace the timing belt.

i had a similar problem yet the same one...this is what u have to do...get a fpr while crankin the car look at the gauge and set it to about 37 to 40 psi,...take the spark plugs off...and disconnect the fuel pump relay ,,,,then again crank the car several times to releive alll the fuel thats in ## motor....then put back the sprk plugs and try starting the car....after crankin it with the plugs in it should slighty turno on....check the gauge and make sure u arent gettin more fuel than needed or u might flood it again...the last step is to reconnect the fuel pump relay....then start the car...car should be good after this....good luck

I had the same problem. Here is what you have to do. First install a fpr , crank it and have some one set it at 37 - 40 psi with the vacuum hose off while cranking it,take out the spark plugs, disconnect the fuel pump relay, then again crank it several times to relieve the fuel thats in the motor. Re-install the spark plugs, reconnect the fuel pump relay, and start the car...have someone look at the fpr gauge to make sure you don't get more fuel than needed....Goodluck

I figured out the problem, It was jumped timing as I said before. But thanks for the help.
