Hey guys, I just put my car back together and it will not start. I refreshed the head with some new valve seals and did the head gasket and timing belt job with a local DSM wiz. We turned the crank 6 times when we were done with the timing and all the marks lined up so I know thats right and the valves aren't bent. I can smell that it is getting fuel. The head gasket is fresh with new ARP head studs so the compression should be there. I am trying to start it in my garage with the door closed to hear the car fire out of the exhaust better and I can hear it want to start and fire here and there. Could it be with the CAS seeing as mine is a 97? I used a picture on another thread to hook that up right. Any idea's of what it could be?

Should be there timing marks i learned can line up and have no compression ive been there, check compression anyway why not its easy to do then rule that out. Spark, fuel, and compression.

Yeah I checked the firing order, my wires on the coil are 4-1-2-3 which is supposed to be the right order. I had a problem in the past with coolant temp sensor wires and the car would start but just die right away, it won't start at all. I will have to find a compression tester to use to check the compression. I sure hope its not anything with compression seeing as I just got it all back together.

I just talked my buddy who helped with putting the head on and timing set and he thinks i'm not getting spark and that is causing fuel to build up in the cylinders and it is getting forced past the rings into the oil. And I looked at my dip-stick and smelt some oil on it and sure enough, smells like gas. So I'm going to pull the plugs tomorow and check spark and check everything out.

Pull out the plug wire and put a spark plug on there to see spark. could be ecu, power transistor, cas, coil pack.

try advancing your ignition timing all the way. My car didn't start the first time when i put it back together until i did that. Then it was golden

What CAS are you attempting to use?
The 2G ECU needs both cam angle and crank position signals (and correctly aligned) in order to fire the right injector at the right time and fire the correct waste-spark coils on the compression/exhaust strokes.

If it stumbles or fires at all, you most likely have an ignition timing problem and should look at the CAS and CPS sensors first.

The CAS i'm using is a 97-99 style one and I followed a thread on here to put it on the right way and double checked that it was on right. I'm going to check the spark in a little bit. One thing that is making me think that it is spark is because I had a 1g style coil pack bracket and I swapped with my buddy for his 2g style one and I think the coils on the one I got may be bad so I will find out and update the post.

Well I have plenty of spark on all 4 wires. Time to check the CAS.

Well the CAS was opposite so I switched it around and put new plugs in and it ran. Thanks guys.

Good to hear.
I'm glad that's the only problem you had. I've had a few mysterious sensor failures and wiring issues after doing stuff less intensive than a head refresh.
