Car turns over easy and won't start

I am trying to diagnose a 96 gst. The owner said it was sputtering and then died on the highway. The motor turns over fast and sounds like it has no compression. The larger timing belt is intact but we can't see the balance shaft belt unless we take the cover off. The motor also seems easier to turn over by hand than mine. Can a broken balance shaft belt cause this? I think maybe the balance shaft belt broke and made the cam belt jump a few teeth. Is this possible? I will check alingment of cams tomorrow.

is possible the belt is stripped.

take off the cam cover and turn it over, seen if the belt turns

Also if the timing belt skipped teeth it can bend valves and kill compression. Do a compression test on the engine and see what the numbers are.

The belt is not stripped. I took the upper cover off and turned the motor by the cam gears. Feels a little easy. I don't have a compression tester but I might invest in one. It is not my car but my friends and I think the balance shaft belt might have broke off and got caught in the main t-belt and made it jump a few teeth
