car shutting on an off when driving!!??

it just started doin this today, i was about to leave work to luch and it was runing fine when parked, idleing smooth and all. but as soon as i started driving after i took off, it ramdomly started shutting off and on like several times. like if i was turning the ignition switch on and off not nought to stall the car. all the lights on the cluster would come on and go off but very quick. so i have no idea what could this be. anyone got this problem before? thanks guys. anything would help. its not an automatic.

You don't reuse capacitors. You really don't reuse the defective capacitors. The defective caps were used in pretty much all the ECUs, TCUs, and bunch of other car electronics between mid 80's and 94.

So should we check the caps in the tcu also Steve? I've never heard of them leaking or going bad???

You must not read my posts. If you have an ATX there is one 47uf cap that must be replaces before it kills the TCU. Unlike the ECU where the caps leaking can 90+% of the time be repaired the cap leaking on the TCU has about a 50% chance of causing the voltage regulator to pump 12v out instead of 5v and that toasts the board.

Sorry for the newb question but by ATX you mean automatic right? And this leads me to ask another question, do manuals even have TCUs?

Automatic Transmission = ATX
Manual Transmission = MTX

DSM Manuals do not have a computer in the sense your asking. Their computer is your gray matter.

Oooohh ok gotcha!. Ok well I'm gona experiment with the 1.8 ecus I have and see how good I can do a transplant of caps , I don't wana burn the board and mees up the whole thing.and If suck at it then ill just take it to a pro tht knows what they're doing after I buy the NEW caps . Shouldn't be that expencive. Would mitsubishi do it by any chance guys?

You should really listen to Steven and not reuse the same caps, he's been in this game a looooooooong time and he knows what he's talking about. They're not very expensive at all on ebay just get some of those.

Do it right, do it once.

Ya that's what I'm just gona do take it to someone that knows. And back to the real question of this thread, the car never did that shuting on and off again. I haven't check the ignition switch yet, ill let you guys know if I find anything since the battery has a cap on the positive post and they're tight on there. Sooo ill let you guys know if the ignition was fine and how that replacement of the caps whent
