Car shakes at speed, new parts!

Ok guys, I have a 97 Talon TSi AWD. Just had the transfer case and driveshaft replaced. I brought it home tonight, all back roads. Decided to get her up to speed a little. Never got over 60, but I have this really strange shake. More like a shudder. Any ideas on what I can check here? Or what I can have my mechanic check?

Did the studdering just start after getting the work done on the transfer case and drive shaft fixed? Where does it feel like the vibration is coming from. Any description on the noise would be helpful.

I took it in because I had a transfer case take a shit on me. I heard what sounded like a chain dragging the ground before I took it in. I just picked it up tonight after work. It feels like the shudder is coming from both the front and rear. Almost like the transfer case isn't matching the rear gearing, but its the correct tcase for the 97 awd tsi. It had a very rough shake when the tcase went out.

How are the tires? Been balanced lately? Just took care of that problem myself and 120 is a dream

Tires seem fine. Had an alignment done the day after I bought the car. It doesn't feel like an alignment issue, not completly. It's more mechanical.

How did you confirm that it was the correct transfer case? I had somewhat of the same problem. Felt like my drive shaft was making the whole car vibrate.

Gearing shouldnt matter i wouldnt think so long as front and rear axles match.

Could be the same issue I'm having. What did you do to fix it? I got mine on here from Stangmurdera...pretty legit feedback from what I've seen.

I think by gearing he is referring to the transfer case being the right mate to the transmission.

I did lots of homework on the tcase for this car. It's the non locking type for the 97+. 96 and lower wouldnt match, (from what my mechanic told me). The guy has a good rep around this town, but not sure if he knows our cars that well.

Hard to tell. I've only driven the car a handful of times. Only other AWD car I've driven was a newer subie wrx. It was brand new, so everything was silky smooth. It definatly feels like the tcase or the drive shaft though.

No. It doesn't do it until I'm around 35-40 mph either. Not at all at lower speeds.

Im not familiar with dsm awd systems just 4x4s but could be the driveshaft is out of balance. I know that will cause a vib at those speeds

Not that I'm aware of. Everything is stock with the drive line. Only upgrades are the turbo, radiator, and bov.

What about the ujoints? He did say that he couldn't find a kit to replace them, but that it should loosen up as i drive it?

I had the same problem and it was just a few loose bolts on the drive shaft. It made all the difference just tightening those 4 bolts. If you haven't already checked that is

I would check the joints for play for sure. I agree with mustard. Anything loose from your tcase all the way to the diff pinion can cause vibration

Yeah, I checked them the best that I could. It was dark when I got her home, and I dont have a lift. So I'll have to check that in the morning. I just wanna drive my dsm the way it was meant to be driven!

Alright, if you did, you would definitely know. When is the last time you checked how good your axles were? Any of them have ANY play in them what so ever? That would be a good thing to check.

I was having the (from what you are telling me) dang near it exact problem that you are. Under acceleration, the car would be alright, but upon reaching a certain speed, it felt as if the the whole car was roaring. The vibration felt as if were coming from the transfer case/drive shaft because of the noise. I changed wheel bearings, was checking rear end fluid, everything. What I think it had come down to was having a bind in my front axle because I have welded center differential. So the vibration was just multiplied. As said about, check the bolts to the shaft and transfer case, also be sure to check the u-joints.

Seems like a lot of the same symptoms. I'm almost afraid to drive it to see when exactly the shaking starts and any more info. IT's driving me crazy!

agreed. just trouble shoot one possibility at a time and it'll be less stressful and likely deem the best results. Good Luck!
