OVERHEATING? The issues and their solutions have remained the same- either you don't have enough cool air reaching the rad, there's a cooling system obstruction which is preventing coolant from circulating, or your head gasket has failed and is allowing coolant to be consumed or pushed away from the engine.

Discuss all possible overheating problems and solutions here.

OK,
I just left my house to go over to my GF's,and happen to look down and see my needle right before the red mark. This just happened out of nowhere. I stop the car as quickly as i can, and pour in some coolant(Coolant a little low). Still same thing. Welp im in the middle of the road, and HAD to get it home. Im only 5 min from my house. I decided to try and make it(I really had no other choice). Welp I drive no faster than 20mph, and the temp needle is BARELY into the red the whole way.And occasionaly to the left of it. Am I ok?? Do ya think any damage was done?? And im thinking either thermostat, or water pump. For each of those, whats a round about $$ figure to get replaced?? Any info you have would be GREATLY appreciated!

nevermind, just looked on the workbench and found my two head locating dowels, I forgot to reinstall them after I scraped the deck!!!!! my theory is that my head is moving once it gets hot and is restricting waterflow. Or that it's moving enough to be blown when hot but sealed when cool. Either way I gotta pop the head off again. Any ideas on how many times to re-use the copper head gasket??? I've had this one installed twice now and it's still holding to an extent? It cost $50 and I'd hate to toss it but I'd also hate to tear this POS apart for a fourth time.OMG

Please Help! My 95 Talon is overheating but only when I'm stopped at a lengthy light or at a busy drive thru. Once I start going again, the temp cools down to normal. Whats going on? I've tried putting the car in neutral when stopped and that helps a little, so does turning on the AC. This problem started about a month after my heater went out. Can the two problems be related? If you guys haven't fallen asleep after all this writing, please help me. It will be much appreciated.

Had the same overheating thing happen to me in my RS. I'd be at a light or a drive thru gettin food and the needle would just start rising. Replaced the thermostat and all was well again.

Ok i have a 92 eclipse 1.8 sohc 175,000 mi my car is over heating and i just put in a used radiator and a new thermostat all of the hoses seem to be good and my oil isn't grey so i don't think it's a head gasket what it's doing is it's overheating after 15 minutes of normal easy highway driving my fans are working fine so i'm debateing weather it's the water pump or if the radiator i bought is all clogged up any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

Could be the water pump, but I'd check the simple stuff first. Replace the radiator cap and do a pressure test of the cooling system. You may be losing pressure through a bad cap or a leak.

alright let me start by saying i have been finding this brown shit all over the side of my car lately , and to met it looked like burnt up anitfreeze , soo i went in and checked the problem and the resivoir was a lil under full so i didnt think it could be that.... until yesterday....

i was driving down the road and i stopped at a redlight and i noticed smoke coming up from my engine bay , so i immditaly looked at the temp gauge and sure enough , the bi*** was rising as fast as hell to the HOT sign , so i immediatly pulled off into some apartment complex's to find a water hose... i spent a lil while amazed at what i saw under my hood , my ENTIRE engine bay , EVERYTHING , was covered in antifreeze and the way it was thrown all over (in the directions) it looks like it was hitting each fan , so i immeditaly thought it could be the radiator......

so i spent the next hour cooling the car down and washing off the engine , in between squirting the hell out of the radiator, got it cool , filled it up with water , filled the resivoir up with water , and drove it home , which is about 3 miles from where i was, by the time i pulled up to my house , it had emptyed ALL the water i had put in out of the resivoir and the radiator.....

WHAT COULD BE WRONG!?!?! i am gonna go check it today , just while i was here thought i would get some ideas from yall on what it could be.

yes , i thought its was the thermostat to....

i found the problem , it was a host down near the bottom of the engine bay , and it was spraying all the stuff i put in , on the front bumper , which was holding ALOT of it , i took the front bumper all the off and had to wash it cause the back of it had a SHITLOAD of dried anitfreeze

i thought it was a hose , but i could never find one leaking and i could find where it had been leaking... now i know why.

Help i jsut bought a 91 awd talon and while driving ti home it was runnign extreamyl hot. the previous owner put in a buschur fmic kit and there are 2 fans on the radiator, but i have notice only one runs while the car is idling. should the other one be running and also would the other fan make that much ofa diffrence. please help me im on a limited budget and i need to know what it is so i can fix it asap. thanks Justin

Before you do any thing drastic check all the basics. Such as coolant level, air in the cooling system(you don't want any), all radiator hoses and check for leaks. After you do that, check the thermostat. It might have died on ya.

ok.. here is the situation.... my girls 91 talon has just been rebuilt about 5k ago. The car does fine on temp until u get down onto the throttle and give the car some wot it tends to go hotter and hotter. well it seems when i come to a stop after that it shoots to 230.... i open the radiator cap and nothing but steam comes out... big air pocket... but i have no puddles and i cant smell anti-freeze........ if i drive normal no overheating problems at all.. or at least i can go a week without adding fluid. Everytime i get down on it... i have to add at the very least 2 galllons

I had a simular problem you might check your HG to make sure it is in good condition hopefully the shop that dropped the new engine did put a new one in but if they didnt that is likely the problem. also i hope they didnt "cookie" your cylinder head cause that happened to mine also LOL. but maybe you just need a bigger cooling system for the New and hopefully BIgger bAdder engine.

A penny for your thoughts LOL

THe hours itr take for a headgasket are killer, LOL. but maybe getting an aluminum HG would help in the future..........Definently worth it LOL you wouldnt want it to go again if it did this time........

Well, it does sound like it might be a head gasket. On the other hand, I wouldn't overlook the obvious. Getting "down on it" means the engine is making lots of power, which means it's also making lots of heat. If you have a marginal cooling system you may be pushing it over the line.

Check all the typical overheating stuff (radiator cap, slipping belts, clogged radiator, small leaks, bad thermostat). After that, do a compression and/or leak-down test.
