car is jerking and stuttering.

My friend has a 1998 GSX nad he was driving home today and when he went to accellerate he heard a noise, he siad was a boom, but after that it started jerking back and forth and stopped. His rear tires aren't moving only his front but it still isn't, moving because the rear is locked up or the tranny is fu**** but I dont know. I belive that it is the rear differential is shot, I think one of the teeth is knocked off and every so often the toothe gets caught back into the gears and locks it up. It could also very well be the transfer case(recall ) or the tranny too.
