Please help me. My car is driving me crazy. I have an automatic 95 Eagle Talon ESI. My car has been dying recently. It dies at high and low rpms. I will be driving and everything will be fine, then my rpms just rapidly drop to zero. The thing is I can still hear and feel my engine running, but my gas pedal doesn't work. When this happens I put my car in neutral and try to restart it. When I turn the key it makes a screeching sound( like the one you hear if you turn your key while the car is running). After the sound it starts back up and drives fine. This happens 2-3 times a day. Could it have something to do with the trans?

Hmm. I have a 96 5pd Eclipse, and the other night I was driving and had to drop this thing off at this factory for my work. Well, there is a long straight road and it's like a backroad, so I figure I'll have some fun. Well, I start out in 1st gear, hit about 5500rpms and go to shift into the 2nd and I see the rpms drop all the way down to 3000 and then I knew something was up and I'm trying to step on the gas pedal and it goes down but no acceleration. So, I just hit the brakes, turn my car off and restart it and it worked fine, but it was making this very loud, bad thunking noise in the passenger side of the engine bay it sounded and whenever I pressed the gas, it would get faster and louder and when I pressed in the clutch, it went away for the most part, but still making the noise, just faint. The next day, I take it to the garage and guess waht.... I need a new engine.... awesome, eh?

Could the starter cause the car to die? I only have 68,000 miles and I had my transmission rebuilt at 56,000. Also my car doesn't throw a cel when this happens.

I was wondering if maybe it could be the sensor that reads rpms. Does anybody know what sensor that would be?

Is it stalling and then dieseling?? Thats what it sounds like. Do you have a logger? Sounds like the motor is pulling major timing which kills it but it has a hot spot or something which is keeping it going. Check out your plugs and see ehat they tell you.

No I don't have a logger. Do they work for a 95 NT. Also could I need a new ecu. Would satan be able to tell if I need an ECU.

Oops I missed that its a non turbo. As long as its obd2 you can reado codes on it though. Im not sure what to say now. It still could be detoinating causing a stall and diesel but im not to fermiliar with nt's.

Well I hooked up a code scanner today and didn't get any codes. Does any body know where I can get an ecu for an auto 95 nt? I'm arfaid thats what it needs Also what is the name of the sensor that reads rpms.

because its a 95. I would guess its the crankshaft positioning sensor. especially if it dies then you can start it back up again after sitting a minute, and it will run for a little while then do it again. they actually changed the crankshaft positioning sensor mid 96 because of its unreliability. Thr dealership will only sell the newer version for late 96-99 and the rewire kit with it. I know this because i had to change mine. hope this helps some.

Hey guys thanks for the help so far. I had my crankshaft positioning sensor replaced a little over a year ago. But I didn't do it a mechanic did it. I'll try and check it tommorrow. Is the ISC the same as the IAC? I checked my IAC with my ohm meter and it checked out alright. Thanks again for all the help so far.
