Im looking at a used 95 GST and the owner says the car will stall out and die when put in neatural, but it runs fine everywhere else. He says this is timing.

Now, from my expierence, timing that is off will affect how the engine runs in everyway, super rough idle, extra....

My ultimate question is that is this a timing problem? What else could it be and how much would it cost to get it fixed?

It could be a number of things. When BISS screws go bad, they can cause a car to die in neutral. Along with bad fuel filters and things along those lines.

do the normal run down

- compression test
- boost leak test
- check timinng
- paper work for previous main.
- check the vin

anything else you gys can think of?

once you hvae that you'll be able to tell wat i could be easier

I am going to run the vin at about 4:00(when the guy gets off work and he can tell me it).

Compression test and boost leak test? Any links on how to do this? is it easy? Seeing as how its not my car, is there a shop around the encino area i can take it too to check it out?

Compression test is easy if you have a gauge. You just take all of the plugs out and turn the motor over the same number of times on each test with the ignition and fuel disabled. Boost leak is done by taking the intake tube off and hooking an air hose to it with something to keep air from leaking and pressurizing the system. Sounds the symptoms of timing though. I had a car jump timing on the highway once and didn't affect gas milage of the way it ran of anything til I went to downshift and put it in nuetral and it died everytime. I would compression check and try lining up the timing marks. A shop can do the compression check for relatively cheap because of how easy it is on our motors.
