I already got the crank bolt off but I can't get the crank sprocket off, I've tapped it with rubber mallet and used a harmonic balancer and the sprocket still wont slide off. The sprocket moved off a little because of something that happened (long story) and I am trying to take it off and I just can't. Another question that sprocket is supposed to be against the metal timing plat correct? Because mine has a gap and I can wiggle the timing plate. Anyways any other ways to get this sprocket off its just like stuck..

after taking off the crank bolt is that washer and then the crank sprocket or is that just one piece all together for crank sprocket?

If it's tight you'll need a puller, it's probably a little surface rust keeping it stuck.

I agree with the puller and the wd-40 if all else fails a little heat should do the trick just becareful not to get it to hot. If you have a friend nearby have him try to walk it off with equal pressure on both sides ( I used two pry bars) and should slide off relatively easy...

Ok had the harmonic balancer on there and was not budging so after spraying pb blaster on over night came back next morning and still was not budging. So all I did was started to yank the heck out of the Harmonic Balancer and finally got the dang crank sprocket off. Anyone know of anything that will clean the inside of the crank sprocket so it wont be so hard to get off again?

I would spray it with brake cleaner to clean it up but it's never going to just slide off next time.

There should also be no gap behind the sprocket. You would never get a timing belt on there correctly either. The crank bolt needs the washer underneath it. Make sure the key and crank are ok. If necessary remove the key and clean the crank up and the inside of the crank pulley. If necessary get another crank pulley.

Soak it down with WD-40, or a similar penetrating spray and let it sit overnight...

Tons of liquid wrench. let it set in as stated over night. Being very careful gingerly tap the gear on its surface around and a around. This will looser to pull. After this mine came right off and it was a stock engine and sitting for 6 years and its 22 yearrs old

Rememeber tap not pound.

I did have to use a gear puller I used another tool to stop the crank from spinning. Putting the bolt into a counter clockwise bind. Then a breaker bar. Righty Tighy Lefty Loosy.

Rubber, Plastic, or brass hammer helps too.. (Hope, your technique worked after you removed that center bolt..LOL)

On a related note: just helped my bro-in-law with his wife's '92 Mitsu Diamante with the 6G72 motor in doing timing belt. These motors only have the center bolt and no 12mm bolts to hold the pulley on the crank.

Pulley bolt is torqued down to almost 180 ft lbs.

He was beating his brains out on how to get that center bolt loosened and busted two screwdrivers in the failed attempt. I asked him if he had a 22mm socket and a beam bar, in which he did. Put the socket on the beam bar, put the socket on the bolt, making sure that the beam bar was resting on the axle solid. I go in the car and bumped the starter..twice...,and during the 2nd bump, I heard a nice "POP!" ... told him that the bolt is loose now. Yep, 10 second starter trick and got that center bolt loose in a quick.

He was a bit pissed at me that I outsmarted him..but thanked me later for the help.

I would use 1000 grit sand paper to polish the mating surfaces. It will help for the next time. And PB blaster is better for parts we would rather keep silicone based products off. Some guy used his WD 40 in the body shop and we had fish eyes for a month. Stuff was like a turd that wouldn't flush!

Have to love the starter trick!

(How would you love to do a belt on this DOHC 6G72?)

You can see that the crank sprocket has no mounting holes for the pulley.

Crank has a key in which both sprocket and pulley uses and the bolt just holds them together.
