Can you tell by these if it's big or small 16g?

Actually, you can. Mitsu has a different ID number for the compressor cover on each 16G variant. Unless that cover has been re-profiled for another wheel, the number 9178-05200 tells us that this is a small 16G. If the part of the number after the hyphen were 04200 it would be a big 16G, and 04700 would be an evo3 16G. On the 16G turbos, you will notice that this 52, 47, or 42, is etched on the newer covers, older ones are stamped, and the rest of the number is cast on the housing.

You are measuring the wrong inlet. You must be measuring the inlet to the turbine where the turbo mounts to the exhaust manifold. measure the inlet to the compressor wheel with a CALIPER. The small 16G is around 1.830", the big 16g is 1.892" and the EVO is 1.902". 2 1/4" is bigger than my 50 trim's comprsor wheel! mark
 
what the guy selling it gave me. It looked like a small but I just wanted to make sure :( It was hard enough to get him to give me THAT info! :thumbdown :thumbdown

haha i think he meant the compressor housing inlet, not the actual wheel itself ;)
 
Yeah, the 2.5" is probably the inlet to the turbine. The compressor wheel's inducer is within thousanths of the compressor bore. If with calipers you get within one of the numbers I posted that will tell which turbo it is.
Sounds like the seller does not know what he has either! mark
