Can someone recommend a diagnostic scan tool?

I am trying to find a diagnostics scan tool that will work on a 1990 Eagle Talon Tsi. Can anyone recommend one for me please? All those I have found on the web do not work on OBD I imports. The one I did find was over $3000 and I can't afford that! (obviously for a mechanics shop - not for DYI personal use). I want to get this for my son as a gift for his birthday....next month. Appreciate any help.

Instead of purchasing a scan tool, you may want to look into a datalogger since it will also allow your son to have a better handle on tuning as he progresses at a fraction of the cost. Besides being able to pull up trouble codes, he'll be able to see his TPS voltage, O2 trim bank readings, knock, timing and a host of other features that will help him get the most out of his tune. You can find some preliminary information here:

Additionally, here's a link to Pocketlogger. All you'll need is an approved Palm device, software, cable and you're ready to go:

Hope that helps,

exactly what andymoraitis said. I don't understand why people keep buying dedicated code readers, when they can spend a bit more and get a logger, that will do 100 times more.

i seen a logger for I think 120.00 in clasifieds a couple days ago down a few pages.

The tool I ended up buying cost me a big whopping $6.00 at Radio Shack. It is a battery/alternator tester with 6 little LED lights on it and two test leads w/alligator clips.
I Hooked it up to pins 1 and 12, turned the key to 'on' and I was done. The LED was flashing my code. The tester tool was really small and it also had a magnet attached to the back so you can stick it close to where you are working. The little $6.00 tool made pulling my code entirely too easy to do and I highly recommend it for those of you with 1g DSM's (and I guess if I wanted to leave it plugged in I could monitor my engine for codes all of the time, I am only out $6.00 for it)

If anyone wants the part number for the tester tool, send me a PM and it's yours.

Hope this helped some... I am not really sure if this was what you were looking for but it will display engine codes on a 1G DSM... :dsm:
