I have a quick question.

A shop here in my town ( remains nameless) built my buddy's motor and did his head. Upon inspection, there was no porting done to his head.

I was away in the army and upon my looking at it today, I will be completing his build for him.

Here is how it sits currently:
Head is put back together
Head is torqued with new arps on a new metal headgasket
Motor is on the stand

Can I:
Port/clean his runners in this state?
or do I have to remove everything to port it?
and can I do that?

Thanks

With the amount of metal, and abrasive grit that will be made from porting.

Yes the head will have to come off the engine, the head will have to be fully disassembled.

valves, cams, hlas, springs removed

A new set of seals will be needed, grit will fall down the guide and be trapped between the guide and seals.

Plus just smoothing the runners will give marginal gains, the bowls is where the real work is.

For what it's worth, unless you are trying to make a ton of power i would just hold out on porting the head.

It's my buddy's build.
He has 268/272 cams, gears, valvetrain, arps with a decked head sitting on aftermarket rods and .020 pistons.
All intake and exhaust has been changed, bigger turbo and a lot more fuel for her too.

To get the most out of it, I would assume a decent port and polish would be better than running stock. ;)
