Can I get away with no gasket between exhaust manifold and turbo?

Ask Me, Virginia
I am running an MHI E316g turbo on my GVR4. I just removed my exhaust manifold to do some other work and noticed that the turbo to exhaust manifold gasket was cracked.

I know that the gasket is cheap, but I need the car up tomorrow and don't want to have to put it all back together only to take it apart for a silly gasket while I wait for it to come in the mail.

I have been searching around, and it seems that quite a few people don't bother using a gasket there and that it doesn't leak.

I'd like to do that if if I can.

Thoughts please??

Thanks

You can "get away with it" for a couple of days but personally I wouldn't drive it much like that. Its an exhaust leak prior to the o2 sensor, so therefore you're not going to get good o2 readings which will affect AF mixture. Also you may not be able to spool the turbo as much as some exhaust gas will escape where the gasket used to be.

I would replace it as soon as possible.

Thank you for your thoughts. I'll clean it up real good, put some copper spray on both ends, and then see what happens for now.

Mach V is about an hour away in Sterling..call em up, maybe you can get the gasket quicker

That's true, forgot about Mach V. It has been a while since I have visited them. It really is a 4 hour round trip around here especially on a Friday and in the family minivan though.

Might be worth it.

Alot of it is just the poor infrastructure between here and there....the minivan doesn't help either. ROFL

You can get away with using a one made from a pop can for a little while.

:D

Are you sure auto parts stores near you don't carry them? At O'Reillys you have to ask for the "turbocharger gasket kit" for a 1G. It's a $30 kit but has the gasket you need in it I believe.

Lots of diesel guys run no gasket, they use high temp grease instead. Just put a coating on the surface, bolt everything together, and warm the car up without going into boost for awhile. The grease will burn up and turn into a hardened carbon seal. Ideally, you want to make sure both surfaces are perfectly flat.

This.

Why wouldnt you go to an advance auto or napa or autozone ect. My local advance auto stocks the felpro turbocharger gasket kit set. Its for both 1 and 2 g but has the gasket that fits the 14b and 16g exhaust housing. Its 30-40 like he said.

If he's running an EvoIII 16G, then the stock 6cm gasket won't work. Well, it will work but it will be blocking some of the opening.

I would just re-use the cracked gasket and use some RTV where the crack is at for now.

^ heat right off your exhaust mani floating around in your engine bay getting it nice and hot. Patch it together to get you where you need to go. You didn't know it was cracked before? Usually you have the part before you tear down. Especially a DD. You should have heard it unless you accidently tore it.

This. Old school mechanics trick. Smear some axle grease and bolt it up together. Should hold till you get a proper gasket in the mail.

Get some gasket-making material from your local auto parts store, and do the cookie cutter route as a temporary fix until you can get a real one.

I think that stuff would burn up wouldn't it?

I have that kit but it only carries the 6cm unfortunately.

I am all for this. I have high temp grease laying around. I mean, if I have read people claiming it is leak free doing nothing at all besides mating the 2 parts together, then why not?

I don't have a gasket on my TIAL EWG to O2 housing and it is fine. Different situation maybe.

What sort of RTV would you use?

I read that will melt. Is that true?

I have seen it half assed seal an exhaust manifold to a head on a Yukon 5.3L. Doesn't mean it didn't leak and it definitely doesn't mean if anyone sees it they wont laugh at you. This was orange permatex.....

I'd becareful not to fry the alternator, I had a leak there and one made black exhaust soot everywhere, sounded terrible and the heat killed my alt.

That's kind of how this mess started in a round about way. I used any old non stainless bolts to hold down the non-jmf heat shield and I have a vented CF hood. Everything rusted up when it rained. Both bolts snapped when I attempted to remove them. Was trying to avoid cooking my alternator by getting the shield back on.
